    Win Update + nVidia GeForce 210 = Killed Win8

This is not about video editing so posting in the Lounge

Sister in law has an entry level Dell for email, web surfing AND photo editing from her digital camera

When I helped her buy a year ago, I had her buy a PNY GeForce 210 1Gig for better Photoshop Elements speed

All worked well for a year, until about a week ago (seems to be right after her computer restarted with Win updates) her "screen went black" and she could not do anything at all

Not knowing it was right after a Win update (she does NOT check status messages, so Win updates are installed "some" time after they are downloaded, when Win8 finally does a delayed restart) I thought she had a hardware problem

After 2+ hours on the phone and Internet remote control with a nice lady at Dell support, she concluded that there were NO hardware problems and the Win8 recovery DVD that is not automatically included in the box is now on the way to me to repair or reinstall Win8

That made me think... and I went to my backup image which I restored over what was on her hard drive

Everything worked again... until I started doing Win updates and the same thing happened... black screen and SEEMING to be a corrupted Win8

Her computer uses the default Win update setting of EVERYTHING is downloaded and installed... as I said above, she never checks ANYTHING, so the default is needed for her

EXCEPT... the nVidia driver contained in the image I made last fall is version 311.06 which worked perfectly with her PNY card... and when I restored from image again, and WATCHED what Win updates was doing... there was a newer device driver listed in the optional updates

AH HA !!! I found the problem... the newer device driver was the problem

Since I can't change her Win update options (asking her to do something new is an exercise in futility) I uninstalled the PNY drivers and card and connected the monitor to the motherboard video out, which uses an Intel chip for video

That may not be as fast as the PNY card when she used Photoshop Elements, but since Intel RARELY updates their video chip drivers I don't think she will have the problem of her screen going black again
