Help on 3rd party noise reduction

    Photo_1985 Community Member

I have tried and ready to purchase a 3rd party video effect for noise reduction I like a lot, but they offer the program only for After Effects or Premiere Pro.  For any of you that are using a 3rd party plug-in for noise reduction, what would you do?  Get the one for After Effects or Premiere Pro?  Working in either platform [Ae] or [Pr] have their pro’s and con’s.  I am using After Effects CC [Ae] and Premiere Pro 5.5 [Pr]. The program is from Neat Video.  Thank you for shedding any light on the topic for me.

I use Red Giant Denoiser II and it works in both AE and Pr. However, it seems to hang up in Premiere CS6 so I always apply it in AE instead. I apply to the raw footage and render out to an intermediate codec, then use the cleaned clip for the editing in Premiere.

          Thanks

Michele Yamazaki has a good article about noise reduction effects here:

Rich Young's post here is a little dated, but it may be of some use to you:

Thanks Jeff.  I have been leaning toward doing in after effects because of

the added effects tend to require rendering in Pre Pro .  When I

tried out  CC and used warp stabilizer in that program, same thing,

chewed up resource and causes a need to render.  I did not like that, so I

never saw the need to get Pr CC and just do any Stabilizing in  5.5 &

CC and render it to a H.264 Blu-ray then import the clip in Pre Pro.

(that is why I save any video effects as one of the very last things I do)

By the way, I use H.264 because it is HD (yea, I know, lossy), Pre Pro

seems to like it and the results seems to be smoother than AVI or any

other format (less jitter on motion).  Go figure that one out. Oh, also

smaller file size (even though less important to me anyway).

Unless there is a advantage in getting the  version, I think I am

going to get the  version.  Still looking for input from others

before I purchase it.  I love this community!  They all seem to be like you

Jeff, friendly and give helpful advice.  The community has saved me lots of

              grief.

Last, how do you like the Noise Reduction in Red Giant Denoiser II?  have

you compared it to Neat Video?

              Thanks again,

              Tom

I've tried testing NeatVideo a couple times over the last few years, but the trial only does SD, and I don't think I ever got it to work at all for some reason. I've been happy with Red Giant in AE CS6, but have heard good things about NeatVideo. DeNoiser II does now use GPU acceleration which can make it about 4x faster than before, though not sure if it works with CS5.5, you're a bit behind there ;-)

As you already know, H.264 is the last thing you should be using as an intermediate codec. A few options -

                1) Lagarith codec - free download. Totally lossless with uncompressed quality, but at much smaller sizes. However, still a heavy file that requires fast storage  Lagarith Lossless Video Codec

                2) Use the Matrox MPEG-2 I-Frame HD codec, which is intra-frame with 4:2:2 color and runs at 100mbps, free download - Matrox Video - Support - Driver Downloads  (look for "VfW codecs")

                3) Download the free GoPro Studio software - this installs the Cineform codec - GoPro Studio Edit Software

I think option #2 or #3 would work well for you if you don't like the large file size of Lagarith.

                Thanks

Once again I see very helpful information from the pro's.  Todd I don't

know what to say, very helpful and thank you.  It seems that  is

winning out over  in my mind.  I don't know if you have tried this

program on both programs.  I am using the 6 core X990 @ 3.47 GB (no

overclocking), 24gb Memory, 64 bit Windows 7 and with SSD drives (now

RAID).  I know, not a lot of power, but works well for me.  If you were

faced with which program  or , which would you choose? and why?  or

perhaps you would not choose because you want to try them out on both first

                  before choosing.

Anyway, I want to thank you for you help and information.  Very good stuff

                  to read on this topic.
