1. Re: What is the minimum mbps speed that I need for internet service to download and upload websites containing videos and animations?
Jon Fritz II Aug 14, 2014 11:57 AM (in response to Noradc)If you are currently downloading movies on a 25 mbps connection and you plan to move to a 6 mbps connection, understand that everything will take just over 4 times longer to download. Streaming video can be done, but it will need to buffer for a while before you start watching. Live video won't be great (either low rez or choppy) if you try to download high def video, especially if you have something else going on on your home network.
Upload speed almost never has anything to do with the "Connection Speed" companies tout in their commercials. For example, I had a 12 mbps connection. Well, that was 12 down, only 256kbps up. I now have 30 down and (if I recall correctly, I haven't looked in a while) 5mbps up which is noticeably much faster. The upload speed on a 6 mbps connection is going to be low, make sure you discuss that and find out what it is before signing on. Anything under 1 mbps is terrible in my opinion.
EDIT: As far as "what is the minimum you need" goes, that's going to be the lowest amount you're willing to deal with as determined by you. I couldn't personally go back to less than 12 down and 5 up. It would be like trading in a new Ferrari for an old station wagon with no engine. Most internet companies won't have a problem if you start a contract in their "slow connection speed plan" and then upgrade later. They almost all get cranky if there's a contract involved and you go from fast to slow though.

MurraySummers Aug 15, 2014 4:05 AM (in response to Jon Fritz II)I disagree. The old station wagon in the Ferrari trade would have an engine but it would be a lawn mower one.

Jon Fritz II Aug 15, 2014 5:48 AM (in response to MurraySummers)But then my lawn mower won't have an engine and the city gets cranky if I let the grass go too long.

Noradc Aug 15, 2014 7:32 AM (in response to Jon Fritz II)Thank your for the beneficial responses. I now know what to expect with having the lower speed plan. I'll give the slower plan a try. Hopefully the grass will not grow too long.
