You can see the version (in)compatibilities here:
http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/system-requirements.html
As it appears, Lion seems to be overkill (almost literally).

cgguven Aug 15, 2014 1:53 PM (in response to Jacob Bugge)So does it mean these products are useless after one or two years and I have to constantly upgrade and hence constantly pay for a product that I already spent a fortune on? Mac doesn't ask (for money) for OS upgrades but I guess Adobe doesn't work like that.

I believe the compatibility is the responsibility of the upgrading party, and it can only be backwards; obviously, it depends on the fundamental (backwards) compatibility ensured by the other party.
On the part of Adobe, it may be noted that all versions from at least AI8 (three versions before CS, from 1998) and right up to CS6 (from 2012) are compatible with the same rather old Windows version XP from 2001.
And on the part of Microsoft, it may be noted that all versions from XP to the current 8.1 (from 2001 till present) are still compatible with the rather old AI8 from 1998 (and maybe even further back).
