John T Smith Aug 18, 2014 9:11 AM (in response to hotphoto)When you exported from P-Pro using the MPEG2-DVD preset, did you change the default bit rate settings, and if so, what were your settings?

Richard M Knight Aug 18, 2014 9:40 AM (in response to hotphoto)You have a standard definition sequence that you are exporting as a HD file which Encore is then converting back to SD for the dvd. Was your dance show shot SD or HD?

Stan Jones Aug 18, 2014 10:24 AM (in response to Richard M Knight)Hotphoto, let me also point out that you are using the "MPEG2" preset rather than the "MPEG2-DVD" preset. You are creating a single file with an mpg extension. You want 2 files, an m2v and an wav (or a3c if you let PR/AME make it dolby). MPEG2-DVD takes care of this as the default, among other things. Richard is showing you the correct preset.

12. Re: What Mpeg 2 settings should I use in Encore
SAFEHARBOR11 Aug 18, 2014 11:21 AM (in response to Stan Jones)To add a little clarity and consolidate other suggestions - choose "MPEG-2 DVD" as the FORMAT, then choose an appropriate PRESET such as "DV NTSC".
Then simply adjust the bitrate to something appropriate to the length of the video. It is said that the file size estimate at the bottom of AME is not always reliable. A good rule of thumb for DVD is 560/minutes = bitrate (or use an online "bitrate calculator" app). For your video of 79 minutes, that would come out to a 7.08 rate. I like to round down a little for safety margin, so if you use 6.9 that should be fine. AME will create two files, .m2v and .wav and you import both into Encore, which will convert the audio to Dolby AC3 automatically (don't mess with the transcode presets, use defaults).
Note that if you import any video format other than "MPEG-2 DVD" into Encore, it will transcode it (re-encode again). If you import a file into Encore that is too large, it will transcode it. Therefore it's in your best interest to have all your ducks in a row to start with to preserve time and image quality.
Please note that for a short video, like 10 or 30 or 40 minutes, don't exceed 8.0 data rate for best results. The DVD spec will accept a little higher rate, but may cause playback issues with some older DVD players.
Thank you

13. Re: What Mpeg 2 settings should I use in Encore
SAFEHARBOR11 Aug 18, 2014 11:45 AM (in response to SAFEHARBOR11)Another reason NOT to use the size estimate in the Export window - the default audio type for "MPEG-2 DVD" export will be PCM, which is an uncompressed .wav audio file. This creates a LARGE audio file - it can be over 1GB for a 2-hour video! If using the size estimate as a guide when setting bitrate, this means you'd need to lower the video bitrate (quality) to accommodate the audio file size. However, Encore is eventually going to convert that large PCM file to a 10x smaller Dolby file...now you have empty (wasted) space on the DVD and a lower-quality video than necessary!
Starting with CS6 I believe, you can look under the AUDIO tab and you will find "Dolby Digital" as an audio option - you are welcome to select that when exporting for DVD and then you'll have the correct .m2v video and .ac3 audio (rather than .wav). The total size of those two files will be correct for the DVD, they will not change later. Don't confuse Dolby Digital with the "SurCode" option which costs $300 and is used for surround sound. If in doubt, export the default .wav and let Encore deal with it, no problem.
Hope this makes sense
Thanks
