I get this message from ReadyHosting. Is it true? Is ColdFusion nowadays so instable? I have problems for more than two months. And it's a pitty that Adobe don't answer my e-mail.
Message:
We've made major changes to the cold fusion platform however due to the inherent instability of cold fusion itself and particularly the database layer (admitted to publically by Macromedia and Adobe), we cannot guarantee 100% uptime.

Perhaps a more civilized response. I'm not sure that this jibes with the message you posted, but it certainly does indicate that ReadyHosting think they have stability problems-- at least on their hosting platform. I'd like to see Macrodobe's take on "ColdFusion's compatibility issues with high-volume, high-redundancy shared hosting architectures," though.

From ReadyHosting.com's support site:
Improved Stability for ColdFusion
We're currently working to improve the stability of ColdFusion on our hosting platform. We've worked with Adobe to test and resolve ColdFusion's compatibility issues with high-volume, high-redundancy shared hosting architectures, like ReadyHosting's. (The large number of concurrent queries has been the most significant issue.)

Over the next few weeks, we'll be implementing a new database layer designed to resolve these issues. Our testing indicates that this new database layer will greatly improve the stability and performance of ColdFusion on our platform, and Adobe agrees that our recent ColdFusion issues should be resolved once the new database layer has been fully deployed.

There is no action required by you to take advantage of this new database layer. Still, it is a change--if your site performs in a way that you don't expect, please don't hesitate to contact us.

The problem may or may not be ColdFusion itself. The problem could very well be ReadyHosting. The key component of the statement is "on our hosting platform".

Providers that host numbers of sites an order of magnitude more than ReadyHosting do not seem to suffer from this issue.

Now I get this message from ReadyHosting. They blame ColdFusion

"The error message is due to a flaw in Coldfusion that causes the database layer to stop working when a number of requests are processed through it simultaneously. This is a known Coldfusion issue. We've made major changes to the cold fusion platform however due to the inherent instability of cold fusion itself and particularly the database layer. Our new monitoring services should keep downtime to a maximum of a few minutes a day.

We understand the trouble that this has been while we have worked on finding a fix. In the next few weeks we are rolling out fixes to resolve this issue. We hope that these fixes will stabilize and improve the performance of the Windows platform.

Can you ask them for an issue reference for this one? It's news to me.
And my servers.

I followd this up with ReadyHosting. Here's the transcript of the
conversation:

Chat InformationYou are now chatting with 'Adam Tucker'
Adam Tucker: Hi Adam. My name is Adam, how are you today?

Adam Cameron: Hi Adam. I'm Adam too.
Adam Cameron: (snap)
Adam Cameron: I'm good.
Adam Cameron: Can you help me with this URL:
Adam Cameron: http://www.readyhosting.com/info/systemnotice.bml?id=2938

Adam Tucker: Sure.

Adam Cameron: Can you point me to a reference on the Adobe site that
confirms this situation? It's news to me.
Adam Cameron: (I'm not actually a readyhosting customer, btw. But I'm
helping one on the ColdFusion forums @ Adobe)

Adam Tucker: Please hold on while I provide the information.

Adam Cameron: cheers

Adam Tucker: Thank you for your patience. we have already implemented that
for some of the customers.

Adam Cameron: Sure, but what's the issue?

Adam Tucker: Could you be more specific on your issue?

Adam Cameron: It's a fairly sweeping / condemning statement. And I don't
know of any such issue with CF.
Adam Cameron: That's what I'm asking YOU.
Adam Cameron: At this URL:
Adam Cameron: http://www.readyhosting.com/info/systemnotice.bml?id=2938
Adam Cameron: You say this:
Adam Cameron: OH. Hang on.
Adam Cameron: The text of that page has changed since i first looked @ it.
Adam Cameron: It used to say this:
Adam Cameron: ""The error message is due to a flaw in Coldfusion that
causes the database layer to stop working when a number of requests are
processed through it simultaneously. This is a known Coldfusion issue."
Adam Cameron: Sorry for confusion.
Adam Cameron: It actually sounds to me like you were running old DB drivers
and have upgraded to the current ones?

Adam Tucker: We have moved all the ColdFusion sites to different server.

Adam Cameron: Not sure what else you could mean by "DB layer".
Adam Cameron: So problem is resolved, basically?
Adam Cameron: So there's no "known issue" with DB instability with CF,
which Adobe acknowledges, basically.

Adam Tucker: Database layer means that we have setup one new server and
moved all the ColdFusion sites to that server.
Adam Tucker: Since we moved the sites the issues are very less.

So it sounds to me like they were running old JDBC drivers ("database
layter" indeed). And once they upgraded them: problem goes away.

It also sounds like they were dollying up the situation with techospeak and
partial truths to make it sound like it was someone else's (Adobe's) fault
other than their own.

I'd say: these is no issue here, other than the lesson to keep your DB
drivers up to date.

And doesn't "Adam Tucker" sound like a bot rather than a person? His
answers don't really seem to match my questions, sometimes.

Interesting.

I find their claims a little incredible, myself. Unfortunately, when I contacted them to ask what's up after seeing the initial post, they simply pointed me to the statement I quoted above.

Their letter:

Hello Adam,

Thank you for contacting Support.

You can find the compatibility of ColdFusion with Adobe using the link given below;
http://www.readyhosting.com/info/systemnotice.bml?id=2938

If you have any further question, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

Huh. Go figure.

So the problem appears to be a server maintenance issue rather than an Adobe problem?

Whoda thunk it?

One thing to bear in mind with USAn companies (I presume it is USAn if they
have positions such as VPs), is that VP is a mostly meaningless job title,
and has no real prestige to it. It seems to be analogous to "works in ~".
So Gary *works in* Customer Support. He might be a team leader, so simply
the person that's worked in CS longest.

I think a better question would be "why am I having anything to do with
ReadyHosting". Seems like they have lack of experiencing with hosting
technologies.

Sorry, no, not in the Netherlands.
