I apologize for the delay.  Here is the write-up on how I fixed all of my RDS 2012 printing issues:

I'll be happy to help if anyone has any questions.

I have the same problem, printserver and 3 terminals service on vmware and I've done that in recent months many of the fixes that you propose.

The biggest problems occur when printing from 32bit applications, to remedy the problem I added this registry key to close splwow64 after 1 minute of inactivity: add DWORD on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\SplWOW64TimeOut and Set the value to 1.

This has reduced the problems even if they have not been completely resolved.

Well, I've been working with the Microsoft technician, and here's my update.

It seems that, as aardum says, this all is related to third-party print processors. In my case, the cause seems to be drivers from HP (tried the last Universal PCL, and the problem persists). After a bunch of tests, I removed yesterday the HP driver and all its print processors, and I haven't got any call since then (by this time, it would be normal if 4-5 people had called relating this issue).

So, I'll be crossing fingers next days, hoping this is finally resolved...

I think the key points are:

              1) Server side print rendering

              2) Winprint as the print processor for all print drivers if using V3 drivers.

I just wanted to give a follow up that I have not had the issue happen again since I executed the changes I outlined.  I hope the guide helps others that come across this thread.

We are experiencing the same problem, i.e. the ‘no pages selected’ message box when printing documents from Adobe Reader.

The issue occurs at multiple customer sites. They use a variety of printer drivers (HP, Sharp, Kyocera, and Canon). The common factor is the use of Remote Desktop Server 2012R2.

Following the tips & guidelines in this thread (and the Digital Zombies article) has certainly reduced the problem, but not totally eliminated it.

Restarting the print spooler on the RDS host (temporary) resolves the problem.

Has anyone any additional tips or tricks to permanently fix this issue?

                    ArenaceousYeti,

If you like, you can PM me your e-mail and I can help you troubleshoot the issue.  As I mentioned previously, I find that the print processor is the biggest culprit, so please confirm that all your printer drivers are using winprint.  Also, what server OS are you using for your print server?  When the issue happens next, even though the printer on the server may be set to winprint, check the user's print processor for the offending printer when you log onto their session and check there.  They may have connected to the printer before you made the change to the print server.  I setup a logoff script that deletes all printers for our users, and then when they log on, all of their printers have to be remapped through group policy.  You may want to implement a similar strategy for about a month until you can be sure that everyone's old printer connections have been cleaned up.

@aardum: You hit the nail right on the head. Indeed, there were still some references to 3rd party print processors (hpcpp170 from the HP UPD, see member ‘hardcrack’ earlier in this thread) in the users’ terminal server profiles. I’ve changed these to winprint.

By the way: even though the user’s default/primary printer is using winprint, they still can’t print PDF documents to it if the problem occurs.

The print server is, just as the RD server, running Windows Server 2012 R2.

We will evaluate the situation in a couple of days and let you know the results.

Off topic: member ‘idtent44’ mentioned the ‘duplicating printers’ issue. We are also experiencing this. I wonder if the two problems are related.

'Duplicating printers'  seems to be related to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Providers\Client Side Rendering Print Provider\

I'm not sure why this key continues to populate when we have client side rendering turned off.
