1. Re: Auto Blend Layers - totally black masks
Noel Carboni Aug 8, 2014 12:26 PM (in response to LJH)Someone earlier today reported that there's a new bug in Photoshop CC 2014.1's auto blending function.
Do you still have Photoshop CC 14.2.1 installed?

aegir3 Aug 8, 2014 12:29 PM (in response to LJH)Hi,
I have the same problem with the exact same result. The focus stacking part does not work any more in CS6 and up. I use the same files in CS5 and it works fine. I have not seen any Adobe comments on this.

LJH Aug 8, 2014 2:14 PM (in response to Noel Carboni)Hi Noel, I'm on the 2014.1 release. I've deleted the previous version. Seems Dietmar has the same issue, not sure how we inform the developers.

6. Re: Auto Blend Layers - totally black masks
LJH Aug 9, 2014 3:20 AM (in response to aegir3)Dietmar, I still have this issue no matter what I try, clearly a problem with 2014.1. However I've been looking again at Helicon Focus. I tried this several years ago and it wasn't brilliant. Now its like a whole new 64 bit application that works standalone or as a plug-in to Lightroom [from the File menu]. It is amazing, knocks the spots off Auto Blend in PS. I'm seriously considering purchasing this for $30 and to use Auto Blend as a reserve when it's working again.

8. Re: Auto Blend Layers - totally black masks
LJH Aug 9, 2014 6:10 AM (in response to aegir3)Let me know how you go on please Dietmar, I'd rather keep the process native to PS if poss. I too have filed a problem report with details. If I get a response I will let you know.

9. Re: Auto Blend Layers - totally black masks
LJH Aug 9, 2014 7:11 AM (in response to twenty_one)Hi 21, I assume you are using the following procedure. Can you confirm please then at least I know it's not me at fault:
1. Take severall registered exposures of an image at different focus points, exposure values [Fl/Sp] on manual and remain the same.
2. Import raw images into PS [in my case from LR] as a set of layered images
3. Select and auto align all images
4. Auto Blend Layers
Thanks in advance

10. Re: Auto Blend Layers - totally black masks
twenty_one Aug 9, 2014 8:23 AM (in response to LJH)Yep, that's the way I did it. But apparently it's the CC2014.1 update (or whatever they call the dot releases these days) that broke focus stacking, not the CC2014 main release.
This update was released only a couple of days ago, and I haven't installed it yet. I plain forgot about it. So that's why it still works here.

11. Re: Auto Blend Layers - totally black masks
LJH Aug 9, 2014 11:20 AM (in response to twenty_one)Thanks 21. Suggest you do try Helicon Focus if you do a lot of extended depth work. Wasn't too great a few years back but pretty awesome now. You still need to keep the images all in register but I guess that applies to any instance where you intend to combine images later.

12. Re: Auto Blend Layers - totally black masks
LJH Aug 10, 2014 2:38 PM (in response to aegir3)There is a solution curtesy of -- Cletus D. Lee -- from the Photoshop Forums:
"Open the creative Cloud App and chose to sort by Previous version. You can replace PSv15.1 with PS15.0 "
Ok this reverts the installation back to 2014.0 but Auto Blend now works .

13. Re: Auto Blend Layers - totally black masks
Dongo Aug 10, 2014 4:24 PM (in response to LJH)you state Auto Blend works now, but as of about 20 minutes ago, version downloaded with the CC app doesn't work.

Any news Adobe?

15. Re: Auto Blend Layers - totally black masks
aegir3 Aug 11, 2014 9:48 AM (in response to Noel Carboni)Hi
While waiting for Adobe Customer support to get back to me after I gave them a sample of the files, I down loaded some of the older versions of PS.
CS6 still works fine
Photoshop CC freezes during the blending process
Photoshop 2014 just produces all black layer masks
Cheers,
Dietmar

16. Re: Auto Blend Layers - totally black masks
LJH Aug 12, 2014 11:39 AM (in response to Dongo)You have to revert to 2014.0 Dongo. Thanks for confirming Noel
I have confirmation from the Adobe Software Engineers that they have picked this problem up and are working on it. Next release post 2014.1 I guess.

17. Re: Auto Blend Layers - totally black masks
aegir3 Aug 12, 2014 2:17 PM (in response to LJH)Hi
While still waiting for Adobe to get back to my on the problem, I have experimented and found another way of doing the blending.
Load stack and align as usual
select one layer and open Focus area adjust to taste and create mask
do this for all layers.
It is tedious and slow but will give you something while Adobe fixes the problem
Cheers,
Dietmar

21. Re: Auto Blend Layers - totally black masks
Noel Carboni Sep 6, 2014 1:02 PM (in response to rchuri)It's a well-known bug with Photoshop CC 2014.1, and Adobe has long since acknowledged they'll be fixing it.
Your workaround, if this functionality is critical for you, until the next Creative Cloud release comes out is to drop back via the mechanism I pictured above, or just run an older version of Photoshop for those tasks.
