    CS5.5 - Video Card Selection, GTX970 vs.GTX780

    ntreuter Community Member

Hey guys, just looking at new video cards. I currently have a GTX570 and wanted to upgrade. I noticed the new GTX970 that came out has tanked prices on the GTX780 down to $300 range.

What do you guys think is the better bet fo rvideo editing? The 970 seems better in that it uses way less power and pushes higher FPS in gaming but the one noticeable difference is the reduction in CUDA cores which I believe premiere pro uses - 1664  in the new 970 vs. something like 2300 in the older 780.

You say nothing at all about the rest of your system

Go to Tweakers Page and start reading... especially the section on a balanced system

That's because I am wondering specifically about graphic card performance.

I've read the tweakers page multiple times Given the newness of this GPU I didn't expect too much information so my question is very specific about CUDA cores and benfeit it might provide.

Right now everything I'm editing is 1080p from either a GoPro or DSLR native (non-transcoded) but I'm hoping a GoPro 4 plus a camera upgrade will start getting me into 4k shooting soon. On a budget of course

I do also play occasional video games and for that the 970 seems like a clear winner but the CUDA core thing throws me off.

How much do you use the MPE GPU accelerated effects and features?  If you use a lot and export much you will gain some time, but since you do not have CC 2014 with its great improvement in 4K GPU acceleration it probably will not be very noticeable even when you get your 4K.

I have had the same questions about CUDA cores and memory bandwidth.  Eric of ADK will be testing the GTX 900 series shortly and promises to let us know.

I use it quite a bit. I think in particular with NEAT noise reduction. I have noticed that I have serious issues with playback ability adn scrubbing once I start adding on effects. I normally don't use too many but almost always have at least some color correction, possibly Looks if I"m trying to smooth out faces, and also stabilization from After Effects warp stabilizer. Those are the big culprits that put my timeline into the "red"

Maybe a better way to phrase my question is simply, all else being equal, which video card is better for video editing given the higher VRAM of the 970 but less CUDA cores?

NEAT does not use CUDA and is ill-threaded. So even the best video card out there will not help you solve the NEAT problem.

The 570 is more than enough on your system. A 780 or 970 would be a huge overkill and a waste of money, sitting idle more than 90% of the time.

Thanks, that's helpful. So the only reason to bother upgrading would be for video game or other performance.

I tried using magic bullet denoiser but it never worked for me for whatever reason :/
