1. Re: Video flicker with Nvidia video card, even after rolling back drivers (Premiere Pro CC 2014)
ADHDork Sep 28, 2014 6:23 AM (in response to ADHDork)Flicker is not in original footage but seems to be added in render and pre-render. It appears in longer renders (see examples below).
System:
- EVGA GeForce GTX 660Ti
- 2.8 GHz, AMD Phenom II X5 1055T
- 16 BG RAM
- 2 x 7200 HDs
- Drive 1: Programs, source footage, media cache
- Drive 2: Renders
Examples:
Export Settings:
- Output:1280x720 (1.0), 23.976 fps, Progressive, VBR, 2 pass, Target 30.00 Mbps, Max 25.00 Mbps, AAC, 320 kbps, 48 kHz, Stereo
- Note: bitrate setting is sourced from the HQ render settings suggested by Google: Advanced encoding settings - YouTube Help
- Source: 1920x1080 (1.0), 23.976 fps, Progressive, 48000 Hz, Stereo
Relevant Project details:
- There are a few dynamically linked After Effects files in the timeline, but through troubleshooting, those have been rendered as AVI and brought into the project, cancelling issues with the Dynamic link
- Instead of applying settings on individual edits, an adjustment layer is used above the main footage for quick color correction (used: Sharpness @ 15 // Brightness and Contrast w/ Brightness @ 0 & Contrast @ 6)
Steps already taken:
- Verified GPU drivers were updated
- Media Cache has been cleared
- 'Unspecified Error' was received on a few of the dynamically linked AE files, so they were deleted and recreated
- Solution Workflow:
- Roll back driver
- Render test footage
- If clear, rendered longer clip
- If unclear, rolled drivers back to previous version
- Rendered all linked AE files as AVI and imported into timeline
- Instead of using adjustment layer for quick-color correction, main footage was nested, and B&C/Sharpness effects were applied to nested footage
- Thinking it may be previous driver installs, all residual drivers were removed for fresh GPU driver install
I'm at my wit's end trying to figure out where I'm going wrong with the setup, render process or what—if anything—needs to be replaced.
Any ideas?

2. Re: Video flicker with Nvidia video card, even after rolling back drivers (Premiere Pro CC 2014)
Chris88 Sep 28, 2014 6:30 AM (in response to ADHDork)What codec has the raw footage? Always make sure you use only 1 codec and set your sequence settings to the same codec as the footage.
Also, keep your footage and render files on the same HDD.

3. Re: Video flicker with Nvidia video card, even after rolling back drivers (Premiere Pro CC 2014)
ADHDork Sep 28, 2014 6:41 AM (in response to Chris88)Source footage was recorded with Canon T3i, so codec: MPEG-4 AVC / H.264 compression, .MOV container.
Except scaling (1080p to 720p), source footage is matched in the Export settings.
I've tried different configurations, but flicker happens regardless of hard system setup - current setup is what was listed. Ideally, the render files and project files would be on the same HDD.

4. Re: Video flicker with Nvidia video card, even after rolling back drivers (Premiere Pro CC 2014)
Chris88 Sep 28, 2014 6:52 AM (in response to ADHDork)Try converting the raw h264 footage with MediaEncoder to DNxHD 185 then reconnect/replace converted clips in your mastersequence.
Back up your original project first though.

5. Re: Video flicker with Nvidia video card, even after rolling back drivers (Premiere Pro CC 2014)
ADHDork Sep 28, 2014 6:58 AM (in response to Chris88)Is there a way to automate replacing 100+ clips?
Even if it works, why would I need to do it?

6. Re: Video flicker with Nvidia video card, even after rolling back drivers (Premiere Pro CC 2014)
Chris88 Sep 28, 2014 7:08 AM (in response to ADHDork)I am not 100% sure try it first with 2 clips (or as many as you need to reproduce the flicker). New project-> import 2 h264 clips into a sequence-> take same clips into media encoder convert them-> go into your project select both clips-> right click "make offline" then link media to new DNxHD files -> see if they reconnect. Or try any quicktime/.mov 422 uncompressed <- Probably better
I dont see any native support settings for h264 in premiere. It seems to me that the preview file format might be screwig with your footage.
You might have to intall AVID codecs Avid Codecs 2.3.7 Download

7. Re: Video flicker with Nvidia video card, even after rolling back drivers (Premiere Pro CC 2014)
ADHDork Sep 28, 2014 2:57 PM (in response to Chris88)Update:
I installed the Avid codecs, and used Media Encoder to transcode the source files to DNxHD 175 (185 was only an option for higher frame rates). By replacing the file in the project window, all linked clips in the master sequence were also replaced (woohoo!).
Might be overkill, but I re-rendered my After Effects clips to image sequences and replaced those as well (previously were lossless AVI and were dynamically linked before that).
The flickering is still there when I render the entire clip, but it's not when I render ~20s.
The flickering is NOT there when I render unedited source footage with an adjustment layer (~4min).
Importing the sequence into a new project didn't help (I figured, but one could hope ;).
I saved a few different versions that alternate removing components (with rendered AE/without adjustment layer ;; without rendered AE/without adjustment layer ;; with rendered AE/without adjustment layer) and will render the sequences with Media Encoder to see what could cause the flickering.
Could it be a bug in an effect? This has only started happening with CC 2014.

13. Re: Video flicker with Nvidia video card, even after rolling back drivers (Premiere Pro CC 2014)
Chris88 Sep 29, 2014 2:37 AM (in response to ADHDork)That sounds really weird.
Can you upload a picture with your sequence settings?
If you want to, you can send me a project file along with 2 files and I can check if I can reproduce the same flickering. (JUst make sure that you can reproduce the flickering in the project that you will send me)
That way we can see if its a software/hardware or settings issue.

16. Re: Video flicker with Nvidia video card, even after rolling back drivers (Premiere Pro CC 2014)
A.Kubba Sep 29, 2014 6:51 AM (in response to ADHDork)Hi,
Try and clear the media cache.
Did you try to export the file in software only mode.
Incase that doesn't work try to trans-code the file through media encoder and check if it helps.
Thank You
Arjun

Shane P Sep 29, 2014 7:54 AM (in response to A.Kubba)EDIT: Ann Bens said there is a bug in CC2014 to mp4
How to eliminate mysterious flicker?
I am having a flickering issue as well in CC 2014 8.0.1 and after unsuccessfully finding a solution I had to stop using it in favor of 7.2.2.
I was exporting media out to Windows Media and Mp4, flickering in all results / all flavors of export settings whether exported via PP directly or via AME.
I tried all of the usual remedies such as emptying media cache, trashing pref fie, uninstall/reinstall...still flickering.
Win 7 Pro
Nvidia GeForce 9400 GT
Driver Version 9.18.13.3165
Is there a telephone number to actually speak to tech support? I tried looking and couldn't find one. All I can seem to find is the live chat option and of course, here on the forum.

18. Re: Video flicker with Nvidia video card, even after rolling back drivers (Premiere Pro CC 2014)
ADHDork Sep 29, 2014 9:15 AM (in response to Shane P)A.Kubba - this has all been software rendered. I have cleared the media cache again and re-rendered through Premiere and Media Encoder. Although transcoding the file through Media Encoder is faster, it still flickers.
Shane - how did you roll back your version (or did you not upgrade your home PC)? Here's a link to their support contact for Premiere. I could call, but considering that each troubleshooting step would be taken after a render, I don't want to explain my situation to a different associate each time I reach out.

21. Re: Video flicker with Nvidia video card, even after rolling back drivers (Premiere Pro CC 2014)
Alaerion Oct 9, 2014 11:53 AM (in response to ADHDork)Hello,
I believe that this is the same problem that everyone else has, I've seen examples on other forums as well (examples below), with people using very different workflows, sequence types, different cameras and effects.
Flickering appears on all 5 computers in our company, but only in CC 2014, in both rendered outputs AND in program monitor. There's just two things that people have in common:
- NVIDIA CARDS , from 600 series, the most popular ones - like 650Ti, 660 etc
- happens randomly on every kind of footage, most notably a light-type effect is applied - like levels, contrast, correctors, - in my case it's best seen when magic bullet looks effect that deals with light (like those implemented with exposure) is applied on an adjustment layer.
Why there aren't dozens of people reporting this:
- They use different software for color correction
- They go back to CC 2013 or CS6 without reporting
I think that the bug is critical and is somehow at the core of rendering/playback engine. There was nothing wrong in previous versions, so Adobe staff members, please review what have you done to cc 2014 and what may cause this! (I believe you already've noticed the problem is quite common nowadays and you're working on it, but I still had to say it)

22. Re: Video flicker with Nvidia video card, even after rolling back drivers (Premiere Pro CC 2014)
Shane P Oct 9, 2014 4:40 PM (in response to Alaerion)I solved MY flickering problem...
I was getting the flickering as well after upgrading to CC 2014 8.0 a few months ago when it was released
I had several projects that were from 7.2.2 and converted them to 8.0, then when 8.1 was released converted them to 8.1. I would get intermittent video flickering just like in your You Tube sample. There was no rhyme or reason to it and was pulling my hair out over it...(not much hair left, have to be careful). because the flickering was soooo bad in 8.0, I stopped using it and just kept using 7.2.2. When 8.1 came out the flickering was still there.
I tried all different methods of testing...updating/rolling back drivers, trashing media cache and pref file, removing adjustment layers, etc, etc.
To resolve the flickering I made a new 8.1 project file. I opened PP 7.2.2 and took a few sequences to test. All of the sequences in 7.2.2 were mts footage with an adjustment layer with either the three way color corrector, fast color corrector etc.I removed the adjustment layer and any other effects and stripped the sequence down to the basic edit with transitions. I then export the XML out and imported into the new 8.1 project file. So to clarify all that was imported from the xml file was the sequence and the clips.
I then started rebuilding the sequence. For color I used the fast color corrector and instead of applying it to an adjustment layer I used it on the master clip directly utilizing the new master clip effect feature. I added a photoshop file with an alpha channel for logo/lower third.
I exported to a variety of formats such as h.264 1280x720, windows media, etc...EVERY export has been crystal clear, and NO flicker.

23. Re: Video flicker with Nvidia video card, even after rolling back drivers (Premiere Pro CC 2014)
Shane P Oct 9, 2014 4:45 PM (in response to Shane P)I also just want to add that I am on a Win 7 Pro, Nvidia Geforce 9400 GT (about 5 years old).
I have used 8.1 extensively since it's release a few days ago and has been absolutely rock solid for me thus far. Now that I have resolved the flickering issue on my system editing has become enjoyable again.
I hope the method I used will help some of you.
