Trying to install Flash player 15 on OSX10.6.8 but the installer hangs up every time. All browsers have been quit, Flash preference file & folder trashed. Activity monitor shows Flash installer not responding almost immediately and eventually stops. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi Seaweed,

Please provide the following two log files:

  • ~/Library/Logs/FlashPlayerInstallManager.log
  • /private/var/install.log

These will be fairly large, especially the install.log file, as such, please post the files using the instructions here, How to share a document.

Hi Maria,

Here is the link to the InstallManager.log file

https://files.acrobat.com/a/preview/c0039d33-ddd6-4afa-a764-cacbad1c2064

There is no install.log file apparent.

/private/var/install.log doesn't exist on my drive.

Thanks

Thank you, Seaweed.

Is there any error on the installer dialog window, or does it just hang there with no error?  If there is an error, please post a screenshot (How to post a screenshot in the forum).

The install.log file should exist somewhere on the system.  It's a system file that gets written to whenever there is an installation.  Perhaps your install.log file is in a different location. Can you look for the install.log file using the /Application/Utilities/Console app?

Hi Seaweed,

I'm not seeing any Flash Player installation attempt in the install.log file.  This is a system file that records all software installations.  I do see lots of 'install failed' entries for related to some application named Rapport, which appears to be some sort of anti-malware software.  Please disable this, and any other anti-virus and anti-spyware software and try re-installing.  If you're concerned about disabling these security software in order to install Flash Player, you can disconnect from the internet as the full installer doesn't require internet connection to install.

Hi Maria,

Turned off Rapport which is security software and also OSX system firewall. Still same result with FlashPlayer Installer.

Hi Seaweed,

Unfortunately, nothing Flash Player related is still being logged.

At which point is the installer hanging?  When the installer is first launched, there's a EULA acceptance check-box and the INSTALL button.  Does it hang before this, or after you click the INSTALL button?  Does it get the install progress bar and then hang?  Please do post a screenshot of the window it's hanging at.

We'd like to get a sample of the Install Manager process when it's hanging.  In Activity Monitor, select the 'Adobe Flash Player Install Manager' process and double-click it.  This will open a new window with details on the process.  Click the 'Sample' button.  When it's finished acquiring the sample, save the file and share the results in the same way you've shared the other log files.

Also, have you by chance run the standalone installer (Uninstall Flash Player | Mac OS), to completely remove what was previously installed, or did you just trash the folders (from your first post you said you trashed some of the Flash Player folders).  If you haven't run the standalone uninstaller, please do so as trashing the folders doesn't completely remove all remnants Flash Player.

I've tried to run uninstaller but had the same result so so tried trashing the flash player files:

/Library/Internet Plugins/Flash Player.plugin

/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Flash player folder
