When is a copy of a clip its own entity?

In the world of FCP and Avid I am frequently duplicating sections of the timeline to repurpose. (e.g. Titles, for the next super, or solid colours to create a different colour.

In PPro I find that I have to be super careful or I will affect the original clip, and even then there doesn't seem to be consistency.

If I alt-drag a solid color clip in the timeline to duplicate, then change the copy, the original will change.

AND if I copy / paste using CMD+C / CMD+V the new clip affects the original.

If I alt-drag a title, however, the changes to the copy are NOT reflected in the original (also a .copy appears in the project pane)

Whereas CMD+C/CMD+V followed by changes to the new title instance DOES result in changes to the original.

It depends on what kind of operation you're doing.

          • For purposes of applying and adjusting effects on track items, every clip is an independent entity.
          • For purposes of master clip effects (new to CC2104), each project item is an independent entity.
          • For purposes of changing the essential settings of a title, a color matte, and other "synthetics," you need to duplicate the item in the Project panel. Titles are a special case in that duplicating one in a sequence by ALT+dragging automatically creates not only a new track item but also a new project item. This feature was added in CC7.0.1.

Thank you Mark for this very understandable explanation.

Always best to understand HOW the software works to know, how to best work with it.

I'm still on CS6 (for vasious reasons), but here's another one on the Pro-CC-list.
ususally 1 out of 10 times i forget to hit the TitleCurTitle.png and end up changing a title from back then.

it's often the "small changes" that can be big improvements for some...
