    Trim without using the mouse?

    jrwing Community Member

In Avid, I love the trim tool: you hit a key to go into trim mode, and the default trim selection is the move the edit point of both clips (roll), but you can also assign to the keyboard the option to select only the A-side or B-side of an edit, and to do ripple or not. Then, hit the next edit key and refine and tighten your timeline as you go. Very convenient.

In premiere, the trim mode has improved, but I find this odd: if I hit the key I've assigned for trim mode, it comes up with the 2-up window (when are we gonna get a 4-up window? that would be glorious), then if I start hitting the keys I've assigned for trimming right or left, nothing happens. Not until I use my mouse to click on the center of the two images in the trim mode window. Then I can use my keyboard to trim. What's the point in this added step? Don't like to use the mouse very much while editing so I'm not sure if this is a bug, a feature request, or if I'm missing a checkbox that I need to tick.

      Thanks!

Check out the many Keyboard Custom Preferences to see if there is one you like.

Use the Search Box . eg "trim","edit"

Yeah, but that doesn't make sense either, to enter trim mode with a keyboard shortcut, and then REALLY ACTUALLY enter it with a different keyboard shortcut? What would that even be called? I see nothing under trim or edit that refers to what I'm talking about here. I just mean I want to be able to go into trim mode and start trimming, not use the mouse to really tell premiere I'm actually wanting to use the trim mode.

              Hi JRWing,

I type "T" for this. Jumps to the nearest edit as a roll edit. Works as expected.

BTW, a 4 up window is not available in Trim Mode, as its set up only for trimming and ripple trimming, not slipping or sliding. Slipping and sliding can be set up with mouse clicks, but you still wouldn't have the 4 up display in Trim Mode. You do see 4 up when you drag with the Slip or Slide tools, though. Feel free to make a feature request for that: http://adobe.ly/feature_request

Alt/Option Left or Right Arrow will begin performing a Roll edit. Perhaps try the default keys to make it work as expected. Then reset your custom shortcuts.

Press Ctrl-T to cycle modes from roll, ripple, and trim (which leaves a gap).

Let us know if that works for you.

              Best,

              Kevin

                Hey Kevin,

Yes you're right, 4-up makes sense with slip & slide and I was confusing it, I think maybe because premiere didn't use to have this or it didn't used to work well. Nevermind what I said!

But to the matter at hand: this appears to be a bug of sorts. As you suggested, I just reset to the default shortcuts and it indeed works fine, as expected. But if I remap the trim forward/backward keys to anything else, it no longer works. Any reason for why this could be? I guess I will submit it as a bug because I find that behavior odd (and means making custom shortcuts for my workflow is pointless).

                  Look ma...no mouse...

I use T or Shift T to enter Trim Mode at an edit point.

Shift Z to change Trim Mode

Ctrl Left or Ctr Right to trim frames

or Ctrl Shift Left  Ctrl Shift Right to "trim many".

Sound like a bug. File one here: http://adobe.ly/ReportBug

I'll look into it, as well.

                    Thanks,

                    Kevin

Hi shooternz, I appreciate your help but the question wasn't how to use the trim mode nor about the keyboard shortcuts. The behavior is buggy and it appears confirmed (below) so I'll be submitting a bug report. Thanks.

                        Kevin,

Also realized that I have never been able to move edit points around even when outside the trim mode, using these same keyboard shortcuts. But when I reset to default, I can select any edit point, and just go left or right. So this is the behavior regardless of trim mode. I can also confirm that this is behavior I've noticed on other workstations and older versions of Premiere going back the past two years that I've been cutting in the program. I've never had it working right and just today was the moment when I said, "finally!" Thanks for looking into it.
