I simply use the finder to navigate to the image I need on the non-indexed directory, and drag and drop the image on the exact frame containing the image I want to replace/update, which places it with the position and scale intact.
Mission accomplished.

I have to make an extra click on EVERY PLACE I make. Over a full work day, those clicks add up. It would speed workflow a great deal.
