Brown Bar Clips to 1/10 sec frame, can't get rid of it

No matter what I do, I can't get rid of this tan bar on the playback marker.  If I try to grab this clip without marking in or out, it takes this small frame.  Deleting the clip and re-importing does nothing, the bar is still there.  It's on at least one clip in every import I do. I'm new to movie-editing in general, and I'm learning Premiere Pro as I go, so some help/guidance in figuring out what this thing is and how to get rid of it would be much appreciated.  Thank-you!

The bar is simply the length of a frame on the ruler. If it really bothers you, just press the "minus" key a few times, the ruler will "zoom out" and the bar will gradually disappear.

Why is it that every time I try to drag the clip to the sequence, it only selects 1/10 of a sec of the clip to the sequence? I can't select the whole clip...

Typically, if the source frame rate matches the sequence frame rate (for example 29.97 frames per second), then duration of the dragged clip should match the duration between the In and Out points on the source clip. If you have not specified an In or Out point on the source or sequence, then the duration of a dragged clip should be the entire source clip duration.

Also try using the Overwrite (.) key or the Insert (,) shortcut keys to place clips into the sequence.

I would STRONGLY recommend reviewing some of the tutorials under John's response item 3 and elsewhere on the internet.

1 - What is the correct forum? I thought this was the Premiere Pro forum?

2 - Mac OS X, Adobe Premiere Pro CC, all updated.  H264 29.97.

Screenshot shows clip I'm talking about with the BROWN bar I'm talking about, behind the yellow marker.  Without marking in or out on a 30-sec clip, when I try to drag and drop the clip to the sequence, it gets snipped to 1/10 of a second, where the brown bar is placed.

3 - My editing sequence and video file match. I've already watched DOZENS of tutorials. None refer to the brown bar.  Hence turning to a forum.

Qengineering Right, but it doesn't match the entire source clip duration.  It matches what the brown bar contains, which is a tiny portion of the complete clip.  On another project, I had a five second clip with this brown bar on it (see screenshot), and could only drag a frame of it into the sequence.  Without marking in or out.  I had the entire, five-second clip selected to move, but only that frame covered by the brown bar would move.

I have tried both of those things. Brown bar remains.

I have also tried extensive google search and dozens of tutorials.  No luck.  It would help if I know what the brown bar was called, I'm sure.  But I don't.

The brown bar represents the single frame that the play head is parked at (does it need a name?)

The timeline underneath the image represents a continuous flow of time.

Since your source is recorded at 29.97 frames per second, each second of motion is broken into ~30 segments (or frames), each representing 1/29.97 of a second.

The brown bar represents one frame, the frame your currently viewing above the timeline. If you had a 1 minute clip and you zoomed the timeline out to show the entire 1 minute duration, you would not see the brown bar because it represents such a small portion of the 1 minute clip.

In your example above, the clip duration is 1 second and 3 frames, since, in this example, a single frame represents a larger portion of the entire duration, you see the brown bar.

If you are only getting a single frame in the sequence when you drag, or use the Overwrite key, something else is wrong or overriding the duration. Try setting an In at the beginning and an out at the end of the source clip and make sure you have NO in & out set in the sequence window.

                        Hi MRuben,

Sorry you're having trouble. Richard is correct about the "brown bar" which is merely the appearance of the playhead zoomed way in. It is a common confusion, so that's nothing to worry about. It is important to realize that the playhead accounts for the entire frame on the Timeline, no more, no less.

I would say that if you can only drag in a single frame of the video with no In or Out points marked, then something has gone wrong with your installation of Premiere Pro. When unexpected things like this happen, a lot of editors trash preferences. If you are not sure how to do that, press the Shift and Alt/Option keys when restarting Premiere Pro. Unfortunately, you will lose any customer keyboard shortcuts or workspaces when doing so.

Hope that helps make sense of things.

                        Regards,
                        Kevin

BTW, the "yellow marker" you refer to in your first image is the "Play Head", you can click and drag it in the timeline space to scrub through the footage.

When you "drag" the source to the sequence, what are you clicking and dragging? Is it the video image, the little filmstrip icon below the image, maybe you're dragging the "yellow marker" (play head)??
