New CC 2014 isn't backwards compatible!

    staceyquine Community Member

Is anyone else finding issues with the compatibility of the new CC 2014 version of Premiere? I have created project in CC 14, and now it won't open in the old version. I understand that new versions of software means changes, but not supporting backwards compatabilty for even one version of the software is quite frankly really poor form. The changes between the versions is pretty minimal. I am working on a project with two other people, and now I have to worry about making sure all our versions of our work is compatible, or revert back to using an outdated version.

Does anyone know a good workaround for the issue? Can I at least revert a CC 14 project back to an old CC version? I now have a project with full synced audio that my collegues may not even be able to open.

It has been like this for ages and Adobe will not change that approach. How much I agree with you that it is 'poor form', it is a fact of life.

It simply means that you and your co-workers better make sure you are on the same page, sorry same version.

It's ridiculous. I've only recently (<12 months) been using Premiere, so this is news to me.

Photoshop is awesomely backwards compatible. For a company that is trying to make everything integrated and intuitive, this seems like a massive oversight.

This is a really annoying feature of PP. I am going through this issue now...well everytime a new version comes out. Like many of us here, I have many, many project files and each time a new version comes out I have to update all of the project files. Well I don't "have to" but I don't want to get stuck a few versions down the road and not be able to open an older project file. I have projects dating back to PP 1.5 from 2002/2003 or so. When I tried to open them in any of the CC versions it wouldn't open it. Luckily I had a copy of PP CS4 on an older computer that could convert them to CS5, then open the CS4 projects with CC.

Point being, it's very irritating always having to up-convert project files and not having any backward compatibility.

It should be like Photoshop where you can have a 10 year old project file and be able to open it. Like wise if you have a PPCC project file you should be able to open it in an earlier version of PP such as CS4/CS5/CS6, etc, minus any of the features the newer versions have that the older versions don't support.

So to answer your question PP project files are not backward compatible. If I need to get a sequence from a newer version of PP into an older version I export it out as an XML file and import into the older version. Some features won't translate over but basic cuts, dissolves, etc will.
