Why doesn't Adobe have 3d modeling program?

    joshuaaaronalpert Community Member

It seems silly to me why I have to use other programs like Blender to design complex 3d models to import into Adobe Director? Adobe is the most well known and established software companies ever, and they can't make a simple program to design complex 3d models? Am I missing something?

          Yes, a whole bunch.

I don't see why they don't.  I use all of Adobe's products for creating artwork and developing software (AIR 2.5)  I can virtually build all my media assets using CS5 and it'd be nice to do the same with 3D models (right now I'm using Blender); especially considering that Flash Molehill is coming out soon!

Adobe should just make a decent 3D editor that works seamlessly with current development workflow and add it to the Web Design suite.  I would buy it!

They used to have Adobe Dimensions.

So far, it's the only program I've seen that exports from 3D NURBS to 2D vector properly (i.e., it converts the NURBS to 2D shaded vector curves). Unfortunately, it was really buggy. :-(

I completely forgot Dimensions was a thing (for a good reason.)

Still, it seems a bit short-sighted for adobe to just punt on the 3D graphics front, especially considering... overwhelming industry trend everywhere?

It would be a good plan for adobe to loot a company that produces 3D software and make it part of the Creative Cloud. That would take a bite out of companies like Autodesk (and by extension, competing software and services like Sketchbook; vendor lock-in). It woulden't be overly difficult to sway the favor of developers with limited resources that are trying to justify the expense of licensing Adobe and Autodesk software. Adobe would win that standoff. Maybe they're just bitter about WebGL?

Adobe Dimensions did some things that none of the other 3D modelers currently do correctly. When you rendered a 3D circle, you got an actual vector circle (not a mult-sided polygon). This made it much easier to edit the rendered 2D vector. Also, they did a good job at shading the 3D object. I really wish they would revive and update it at some point.... :-)

BRilliant topic for discussion, my daughter has just chosen business studies and product design at A Level and Adobe was my first choice for this 3d industry subject. Except there is no package in CC. Why?

I wonder whatever happened to Macromedia Extreme3D.  I actually never used it, but I did own it once and had the manual sitting on my shelf for many years...

I have to agree with you.   CC markets itself as a complete solution but without 3d modeling (which is becoming big esp with 3d printing) it has a hole.   They started putting some 3d capabilities in photoshop but you can't export for standard 3d formats like fbx as far as I can tell.  If they did come out with or revive a 3d modeling product it would certainly bring the price down on such products that (with the exception of things such as blender) are in the $800+ range ..compared to professional drawing/painting tools which are half that.
