Disabling master clip effect feature (or how to fix this strange behavior?)

    jrwing Community Member

Ever since Premiere Pro introduced the master clip effect feature, there is a behavior that has bothered me on a daily, consistent basis and it drives me absolutely nuts.

First off, very rarely would I ever want to use the master clip effect feature, because while I see its value on say doing a quick color grade on a long clip or what have you, it's rare in my editorial process that I would want an effect across the board.

Second off, I use the effect controls religiously in my editorial work, so much so that I have it in its own panel away from the source monitor, so I don't have to click around looking for it. I'm constantly resizing, repositioning, changing blending modes, and adding basic filters to improve my image, and I like to do it as I edit to try ideas out and see what works. In a nutshell, I like to work with effects quickly and efficiently.

So to get to the behavior that drives me crazy: it used to be when you wanted to adjust the motion of a clip, you would select your clip on the timeline, then navigate to the Effect Controls panel, then select "Motion" and either use the slider values or use your mouse over the Program window to rescale/repo to your hearts content. But ever since the master clip feature was introduced, this is what happens almost always: I select my clip I want to adjust, I navigate to the Effect Controls panel, I select "Motion" and then all the options will disappear, like the video effect controls will go blank! Then what I have to do is manually select the clip in the timeline a second time, then navigate back over and select "Motion" again, and suddenly now I have access to the motion controls or effect options that I was intending for that clip.

So... I'm guessing this is a bug, because it doesn't happen every time, but I would say 70% of the time, and it's erratic. It adds time and frustration to my day when I'm trying to work quickly, so if it has something to do with the master clip effect feature (and I'm assuming it does), I wish I could disable this. If not, perhaps I should submit a bug report to Adobe...? If anyone has experienced this behavior, please chime in!

I would not personally assume that behavior has anything to do with the Master Clip. That is an *option*, not something that is designed to push anyone into using it. So I would hazard a guess you've got a bug of some kind, unless there's another thread on this I've not seen. PLEASE post such behavior using the bug-report page.

Here's why I suspect it has something to do with the master clip effect feature:

            1. This behavior began immediately after I updated to whichever version of Premiere added that feature (I believe it was earlier this year?)

            2. When it happens, the text above the label that says "Video Effects" goes from text name of the clip selected being highlighted (in blue) as in "[Sequence Name] * [clip name]", to now highlighting what says "Master * [clip name]", and that's when I get the blank video effects panel. I don't know if that is clear but it's the best way I understand how to explain what is happening, and why I suspect the master clip feature is inducing this behavior. But I assume you're right, that it's likely a bug and not intended by design.

I haven't seen that behavior. I just went to PrPro, opened two different projects, clicked a clip and my effects panel was just there ... as I've always seen it. There's a "Master Clip" tab to the left of the tab with the clip name, but ... my system opens the clip-named tab as expected ...

Your system's doing something strange on you perhaps ...

Actually I've noticed this behavior on various workstations (mac) on any kind of projects in various post houses, right after that update, so it's definitely something funky with PrPro that corresponds to that update for whatever reason.

Okay, so I am curious if I can have you recreate the issue: What happens when you select a clip in which you haven't applied any effects in your timeline, and you see the clip-named tab as expected, but then go select "Motion" to twirl it down? (I've actually noticed this behavior exclusively on clips in which I haven't applied any effects or twirled the arrow down... if I've already made adjustments or twirled the arrow on say the motion tab previously, when I return to that clip this behavior no longer happens)

Just to show be more clear of what is happening and to show you I'm not totally crazy, I took a screen recording of what I mean.

And again, I re-iterate that this has been the case on many workstations, so I'm guessing it is a bug, at least in the mac version (just want to get to the bottom of it before submitting a report). Thanks!
