Why does Lightroom crash when I click on IMPORT?

I bought the download of 5.5 today from Amazon. I did the software update - to version 5.6. I have a Windows 8 machine. Everytime I click IMPORT I get a message: Windows has encountered a program and needs to close the application. Is there a resolution for this issue? Or did I just throw away $135?

Hi,

Could you give the Event Viewer a look?
If you open it and look into System
%windir%\system32\eventvwr.msc /s (you can type it in in the run input field on the start menu)
Look into Windows logs/Applications and let us know if you can see an Error with Lightroom.
Just copy the values in the log and paste them here.
