Dreamweaver October 2014 release is now live! Important information.

    Preran Employee Hosts

      Hi all,

The latest update to the 2014 release of Dreamweaver is here! There are lots of new features to look forward to, and some features that were incorporated based on your feedback. However, please go through these notes before you proceed with updating  your software.

I request that you do not use this post to provide feedback on features. Create separate posts for each of those discussions.

      Installation:

You will see a lot of exciting changes in your CC desktop application. They are all pretty obvious and if you have any confusion, let us discuss them over a forum post.

      • If you are not prompted for the latest update in your CC desktop application, log out of the application, and log into it.
      • Trial version users, please note: If you have installed a trial version of DW, you will not see the Start Trial button like for other applications. Click DW CC 2014 to launch the application. For more information see, http://helpx.adobe.com/dreamweaver/kb/start-trial-unavailable-dreamweaver.html
      • Installation Instructions: See http://helpx.adobe.com/dreamweaver/kb/installing-latest-update-dreamweaver-cc.html for information on installing the latest Dreamweaver update. To confirm if an update has been installed, select Help > Update. The version number should read 2014.1
      • Dreamweaver goes 64 bit: If you are a Windows user, the Creative Cloud desktop application detects the OS on your computer and installs the 32 bit version or the 64 bit version accordingly. For Mac OS, only the 64 bit installer will be used. See the blog post for details
      • Because this is a full blown installer, the download and install time could be slightly higher as compared to other software in the Creative Cloud.
      • Manual install of previous extensions: While the Add Ons will be synced through CC, you will have to manually install any extensions installed through the latest extension manager. Please update to the latest version of the Extension manager (7.3) before you install your extensions. If you are in the middle of something that requires your extensions, you probably want to complete your project before you embark on updating your software.
      • Launch and uninstall apps directly from the CC desktop application: See Creative Cloud Help | Install, update, or uninstall apps

      What's new in Dreamweaver CC

There are many changes to the user interface. Please read the document carefully so that you have a complete understanding of these.

      • New Features: Dreamweaver Help | New features summary
      • The Extract panel is now featured prominently in the user interface .If you use PSD comps to create web designs, you will find this integration very useful. And even if you do not, we urge you to give it a test run.
      • The default workspace has changed. If you would like to use a different workspace, change the option from the Workspace menu, or create a new workspace.
      • Phonegap Integration deprecated: To ensure that you have access to the latest Phonegap updates, this feature is deprecated. You can use http://build.phonegap.com directly to package your applications. More info in this article.
      • The Business Catalyst option in the DW menu will be available only after the BC extension has been installed on the computer from the Add Ons page.
      • Known Issues: For a list of known issues with this release, see http://helpx.adobe.com/dreamweaver/kb/known-issues-october-2014.html

We will be looking forward to your feedback on the new release.

      Thanks,

      Preran

Maybe an email to subscribers warning them that they will need to waste half a day upgrading DW and figuring out how to set up their work areas.  While you message and help here is appreciated most people will come to Adobe support after they realize they can't do their work thanks to the wonderful upgrades.

Will another version of the program be installed alongside the existing version (CC 2014) or will the existing version be replaced

              Hi Tropical Soul,

Because this is an update, the existing version of your application will be replaced.

              Thanks,

              Preran

                Hi MarkinDenverCo,

I apologize for the inconvenience. We are doing our best to ensure that you have the information before you upgrade.

                  Peran,

Your release notes suggest that the extensions will need to be reinstalled - I did not think that this was necessary on an upgrade just a full install - please clarify.

Good question. The reason for an exception this time is because of the 64 bit support, a full blown installer is being used for installation as compared to a patch. This is the reason why extensions will have to be reinstalled.

I don't think I've ever seen a worse update to a piece of software than Dreamweaver October 2014 release. The mind boggles at what Adobe must have been thinking when they released this on the world. Completely different workspace that is the most obtuse piece of programming poop I've ever had to deal with. Just try editing a table with this. Thanks, Adobe, for one thing. I will now stop using Dreamweaver completely. I still cannot believe this. So this is what we get for being joined at the hip with Adobe.

So how can we go back to 2014?  2014.1 won't launch... so I need to get back.  I see no way to do that.  How long might it take for Adobe to make 2014.1 usable on Yosemite?  I think Apple releases it this week.  Unsuspecting customers will find their Dreamweaver unusable... not good PR for either company.

In the Creative Cloud Desktop App...

                            Click the Apps tab

Scroll down to Filters & Versions

                            Choose Previous Versions

Click the dropdown menu for Dreamweaver and it should be listed

Others have said it is there anyway. I haven't updated yet due to the issues being posted about. I'll just wait for a little bit for some of the bugs to get ironed out.

                              Thanks, Jon.

You can go back to DW CC but I don't think you can go back to DW 2014, which worked fine on Yosemite.

If Adobe can't get DW 2014.1 to work on Yosemite, I hope they will allow us to go back to 2014...

I have tried on Mac 10.10 and DW 2014.1 is launching fine.

You can get DW 2014 June release from below link

I  hit the update all button on the CC app and now Dreamweaver 2014.1 says it is a trial. How can ONLY Dreamweaver be a trial when the rest of my apps are happily working, as they should. I uninstalled it, then re-installed and it still says I have 23 days left in my trial. Is Dreamweaver 2014.1 somehow no part of the Creative Cloud? If so, why would the CC app happily upgrade without warning me that this "update" was actually some sort of paid upgrade.

                                    Relicense the Creative Cloud product:

                                    1. Launch one of the problem Creative Cloud applications.
                                    2. On the Creative Cloud application trial screen, click License This Software.
                                    3. Sign In with your Adobe ID associated with your Creative Cloud membership.

I have signed in and out with my Adobe ID several times. ALL the other apps are perfectly happy with it, but for some reason Dreamweaver 2014.1 insists it is in trial mode. The link you shared is not applicable to CC 2014.

I think the link I supplied is applicable to ALL Creative Cloud apps including CC.  Did you deactivate DW from the Help Menu yet?

There is no option to deactivate from the Help menu in CC apps - the only option is to Sign Out. I did sign out, uninstalled Dreamweaver 2014.1 (using CC Desktop App), start up Photoshop - which started just fine without being signed in. I signed in and it worked just the same. I signed out again, reinstalled Dreamweaver 2014.1 (using CC Desktop App), and started it and was once again told that it is a Trial, so I press the License This Software and sign in to my account. At this point, the box sits for a second, does some weird flickering, and then asks me for a Serial Number. Somehow the serial number that licensed Dreamweaver 2014 as well as all the other CC apps that I have installed (Photoshop, Audition, Premier, InDesign, ...) does not work for version 2014.1.

                                          Help_and_Menubar.png

After doing this and then reading through your link, I see that if you substitute "Sign Out" for "Deactivate" and ignore that Creative Cloud is never mentioned in the text (only CS6) then it is basically the same procedure. I even installed other CC apps I don't normally use (e.g. Muse 2014.2, Flash Professional...) which all worked perfectly fine. It is only Dreamweaver 2014.1 that has issues.

You need to Deactivate DW Trial directly from from DW's Help Menu; not creative cloud desktop app.  Are you able to do that?

                                              2. Sign-out from the Creative Cloud Desktop app. (Click on the gear icon > Preferences > Accounts tab > Sign Out from Creative Cloud)

                                              3. Quit the Creative Cloud Desktop app. (Click on the gear icon > Quit)

                                              4. Launch the Creative Cloud Desktop app & sign-in again.

This should resolve your issue. Let us know !

                                              Thanks,

@ Nancy O: The image I posted is the Dreamweaver help menu. There is no "Deactivate" for Dreamweaver CC - or in any of the other CC apps - only Sign Out.

@subhadeep_banerjee - I've followed your steps several times with no luck.  I also uninstalled Dreamweaver 2014.1 using the Creative Cloud app, then quit CC app, then uninstalled the CC app, restarted my Mac, downloaded a fresh copy of the CC app. Ran it and signed in. Reinstall Dreamweaver, and it once again tells me that I have to license it when I run it, then offers to Sign In with my Adobe ID (which is already signed in). Still doesn't work. I've also told it "Not My Adobe ID" and re-entered it again. Still no luck - I've got 22 days left on my "trial" of Dreamweaver while all my other apps are working just fine.

I got a link to download the last version of Dreamweaver (the version just before the 2014.1 "update"), so went ahead and told the Creative Cloud App on my laptop to "update" Dreamweaver. Same result. All the rest of my apps are happy, Dreamweaver 2014.1 is now showing 30 day trial on my laptop. So it isn't something wrong with my particular computer.

Creative Cloud membership is great as long as it works. I've got a support request in and am awaiting a call, so thanks for your ideas. I'll post back if we get it fixed.

This is a disaster! I can type text in the code, image same. No way to insert it, no way to do anything with images or text where I "see" it on the page - just typing typing typing in the code. And nowhere a tutorial for users who work with dreamweaver since years and now have to find out again from scratch. Thankgod I can still use the previous version, otherwise my website would be inaccessible for myself. And this is called "intuitive"???

I cannot switch to design view, there is no dropdown there. Maybe that is the entire problem. As it is now, I cannot do anything in the window, only in the code. Deleting one character means the entire box with that text is gone. Inserting something is impossible. It is the same as it was in live view in the previous Dreamweaver version, but in that one I can work in design view.
                                                        I work in fluid grid.

Lise, in the latest version it is no longer possible to work in the design view when fluid grid is active. There are some work-arounds, but the DW development team is (hopefully) planning to replace it with (hopefully) a similarly functional live view.

Provide "Design View" for Fluid Grid Webpages

Re: Is there any way to display the Design View in fluid grid pages?

Now that I know that design view deliberately has been removed, I have been googling for that problem.

What I found: double-clicking in a box makes it editable. Who knows, maybe I also discover how to insert images and maybe maybe even discover everything...

                                                            Never lose hope.
I am lucky, I have both versions, the previous and the new one, so I can choose which one to use. Having to learn everything all over again when the website absolutely has to be changed or all customers run away and nothing works - uff

And Herbert, thanks! Going to vote for the return of design view.

Adobe - a little explanation when a new release comes out (or an easy way to find it) would save many people a lot of trouble.

Well, the design view is not completely removed (yet), but just does not work with fluid grid pages. They are going to remove it, though, in an upcoming version. This is a good thing, since the design view is a bit of a dinosaur.

Having said that, the DW dev team made the classic mistake of introducing a major change in the workflow without providing an alternative. It would have been a far better idea if they had waited introducing these changes at a later point in time when that (good) alternative had been ready to roll out completely. Not a very wise move indeed.

For many users this 2014.1 update feels like alpha/beta software, and the dev team is pretty much asking their users to become beta testers in the other threads - a second mistake on their part in dealing with the current mishap: their paying customers are not to be treated as beta testers. That's what a QA team ought to do.

Hopefully the DW team has learned one or two lessons from this experience, and they will think twice before pulling a stunt like this again.

Which begs the bigger question, what's happened to the official BETA testing team?  Has Adobe abandoned that as well?  It seems to me that these blatant workflow issues would have been picked up immediately by competent beta testers if they had been given an opportunity to preview it.

The way I see it, it raises questions about where Adobe is taking Dreamweaver. I can only mention my own experience here: I started to use DW at version 1, and stopped using it soon after Adobe had acquired Macromedia. Why? Because in my experience Adobe still does not really know how to deal with the web and users developing for it. I still keep up with DW, because my job as an instructor requires it at times. But as you say, Nancy, who exactly is testing DW - are they actual front-end and back-end web developers who are up to speed with what is currently going on in terms of web dev workflows?

Even my department head, who swore by DW for all his development work, switched to PHPStorm about half a year ago - and believe me, he is extremely conservative in his coding tools. So why?

Dreamweaver's biggest assets were the visual building blocks that would assist anyone, a beginner or a savvy coder, to build web sites with good web standards code. It would also promote any user to get to know more about the underlying code, while the visual tools would assist experienced developers to just get at the finish line faster.

That, and it was one of the better code editors out there.

Fast forward to the current situation:

                                                                  - the server behaviours are deprecated, and no alternative workflow is provided (bar getting third party paid solutions). This was one of DW's outstanding features - yes, the old ones were starting to become unusable for real work, but that was the result of the DW dev team at Adobe allowing to those linger, wither, and die an undeserved death. There is still nothing on the market that replaces it. Adobe could have modernized these, and turn DW into a rapid dev environment for php applications. They missed that opportunity. Php almost seems an afterthought nowadays in Dreamweaver. A real shame.

                                                                  - fluid grids, responsive frameworks, js frameworks: instead of supporting some of the most widely used css/html frameworks, like Bootstrap and Foundation, for some reason the DW team decided to come up with their own code. Products like PineGrow and Macaw are completely aware that this is a bad strategy. Most developers I know choose to use either Bootstrap or Foundation. - go with the flow, not against it. Support the major frameworks in your product. Integrate those nicely. I still do not know why Spry was introduced into DW in the first place - did Adobe expect to be able to force everyone to use Spry?

Why not support all major html/css/js/php frameworks out of the box? NetBeans does that, and other IDEs do it as well. And keep those updated outside of the main DW update cycle. Stop relying on your own custom code templates, or only parts of existing standard templates like the html5 boilerplate. Go with what is used out there by professionals. And make it imminently accessible to beginners and less experienced coders. Because that is what DW was all about initially.

For example, allow your users to insert a Foundation-based or Bootstrap-based menu bar with one click, and allow them to edit it visually in the view. Extend Dreamweaver with a simple to use system to extend it in this way for your  users - perhaps improve the snippets panel with some form of code hinting that allows the user to control what is visually editable in the view.

                                                                  - one of the major issues is the way the GUI has suffered throughout the years. The panels, etc. are okay, but the interaction with the design view and live view leaves a lot to be desired. Macaw leads the pack here - instead of warning your users that fluid div tags must be inserted inside specific tags in the design/live view, make the application smart enough that this is handled automatically (basing this in CS6). In Macaw this is a non-issue.

The way media queries are implemented in Macaw is also a great example of good usability. At times DW's GUI just feels somewhat or greatly outdated. Keep up with the competition.

                                                                  - the design view should have been booted out a long time ago, and replaced with an equally powerful live view that is based on existing web standards. We know this, and the dev teams is now attempting this move, but in my opinion this is far too late in the game. Make the live view as functional as the one in Macaw, and users will come back to DW in droves for front end development. And add in a connector that updates the code you are working in DW when you change it in the browser inspector. Like Brackets, NetBeans, SublimeText, etc.

                                                                  - DW's code editor is hurting as well. It no longer is the leader of the pack, as it used to be, and is now lagging (literally if we follow the comments of many users on this forum) behind others, many which of are free. Especially so for Javascript, Sass, Less, and others. Code formatting could be improved so much. After having worked in other editors, whenever I return to DW it feels like I've just traded a jet plane for a Sopwith Camel in my opinion. Keep up with what your competitors are doing!

                                                                  - DW has this great extension system, and it seems under-used as well.

                                                                  - aside from the main issues I mentioned, make DW fast and flexible, as it used to be. Improve the FTP functionality - I know many students who avoid DW's ftp, and rely on other solutions. Please improve the SASS/LESS integration by tenth-fold.

And try to really understand how developers work for the web nowadays!

Anyway, just my two cents. The way I see it, is that Adobe's DW team has had no real long-term strategy, and keeps lagging behind everyone else nowadays. They have not seen the potential of DW, neither have they played into DW's strengths.

As an example, some Photoshop plugins are great for people who want the extra functionality they provide. But casual users can still get their work done without having to buy costly plugins.  Photoshop is for the most part a complete product. And it must be to satisfy the price-point it occupies.

When costly extensions become absolutely essential to day-to-day workflows, something important is missing from the core software.  Either the product price needs to be adjusted downwards or the extensions themselves need to be permanently added to the core product.

PS has done this time and again by introducing new features that began their life as 3rd party plugins. So maybe DW IS under utilizing its Extension potential.  I just don't want to be obliged to 3rd party extension developers for essential features that DW should have in the core product.

                                                                    Just my 2 cents,

I have very little knowledge of Dreamweaver, just learned by doing and trying, and I get along quite well, most of the time. But changes like this one now, and maybe in the future having to change everything again to post-fluid-era is just a bit too much!

As Nancy states, Phonegap's update cycle is way tighter than DW. Scirra Construct had similar issues with Node Webkit, and decided to offer two installation packages: one for the main application, and one for the Node Webkit export that can now be updated separately from the main app.

But then, the same holds true for other frameworks - so where do you draw the line? It would swallow up too much dev time - perhaps that is why the DW team decided to remove it?
