move pictures from external harddive to laptop

I am new to Elements, and mistakenly thought when I did an "import" it would move the pictures file (close to 9,000 pictures) onto my laptop harddrive. It did not. What's the best way to have Elements use the pictures that are on the harddrive ( I don't want duplicates of all the pictures!)

The organizer can move pictures or folders of pictures on another master folder or drive.

The interface is slightly different according to your Elements version, but you have to be in 'Folders' view mode, which shows your drives and folder trees in the left panel.

To move folders with their subfolders elsewhere, you simply drag and drop the folder. You can drop on another drive.

To move individual files, you select (highlight) them in the browsing space on the right and move them on the correct destination folder in the left panel. You can also use the File/Move menu.

Be prudent not to move in a folder with the same file or folder names.

What is extremely important is not to move folders and files outside of the organizer via your Explorer/Finder. The files links would be broken in the catalog and you would have to 'reconnect' them.
