JJMack Nov 22, 2014 7:12 AM (in response to Axcel3D)Layers can be duplicate from one document to and other. Smart Object are not excluded. Now Smart object layer may contain linked object or the may be self contained with everything embedded copied into the object in the layer. When every thing is embedded in the layer and you have the document open in Photoshop and you double click on the layer in the layers palette to update the smart object. Photoshop copies the content of the smart object into a temp file in the users temp space and opens it in in ACR or Photoshop for you to update. When you commit the update clicking OK in ACR or Save in Photoshop. Photoshop will update the original smart object embedded object. This embedded object is not shared in other documents.
If a smart object layers embedded object is a linked object when you double click on the smart object layer to update the smart object. Photoshop will open the linked file. If you update that file and commit the changes Photoshop will update open document that have smart object layer with linked to the file. However Photoshop will not update other file that also have smart object layers linked to that file. They will only be updated when they are opened in the future in Photoshop. Then Photoshop will discover that the smart object layer linked object has been updated.
