Does PS CC support media storage on a server with the Application on a Macbook Pro?

    JerryHooper

I currently use PS Elements on a Windows PC but am upgrading to a Mac System with a Mac Mini Server to handle the data but the Application to be installed on the MacBook pro. I am concerned that the PS application, PS Elements12, CS6 or CC will not be able to access the files on the server. I have 148,000 photos which take up 1.3TB and am keen to have the flexibility to have my MacBook working away from direct connection to the Hard Drive. I tried to restore the catalog from my last backup and got an error message that it did not support servers. I asked Adobe and got constant answer that it is not possible with Elements 12 but one person said CS6 and CC would be OK and the other said No servers are not supported?

Adobe does not officially support remote storage though it should work and I use it all the time on my home network which consists of all windows system.  I do not have any Mac or mac cloud although I believe netgear has a mac cloud I can install on my routes which will use the  usb3 4TB drive I have on the router.  I do not use any local iCloud for our iPods or mini iPad.

I could also see there being problems mixing OS and Files systems.  Apple uses a Unix OS and Unix File system and Windows OS uses its own File systems FAT and NTFS.    If I were to consider mixing OS  like Mac Unix and Windows I would think file sharing would be best done by install Samba  file sharing.

            Hi

            Thans for your reply,

I am not planning on mixing file systems, I will be using only Mac hence looking to restore my backup from the PC system onto the Max system and then shut down the PC, which is rather old!

Seems you are using remote storage via your router and so there is no Server, that is an interesting alternative and that could work as it seems it is having a server that is causing the problem

            Regards

            Jerry

Hi, Just realised that you said you are not using a router, just remote storage. Yes, I have done that for years and it is fine. The problem is I am trying to have an automated backup system and the ability to use the Macbook to work on photos when not at my desk. Hence the idea to have a small server looking after the storage and talking to the Laptop. Jerry

No I do use my routers USB3 4TB drive to back up my systems. I do not run an iCloud  service on my router. Backup is run by windows on each machine and the backup is stored on the routers usb3 attached 4TB drive.  I will also from time to time run a backup where I will store a backup  on local attached drives.

The USB3 4TB external drive attached to the routers USB3 port is formatted for a windows system.  And appears as a remote shared storage on my windows systems.  So the router can read and write to the attached external drive. On occasion this drive has been marked dirty and I have had to un-plug it from the router and plug it into my workstation windows see its marked dirty and runs check disk and repairs the data structures. To date I have not seen any data corruption.

Thanks JJMack, fully understood, that is certainly a solution although I am still interested to see if anyone has any knowledge about using a server.
