How do I capture video via USB?

    capturing video

I hve a very nice Sony camera. I want to transfer video from my camera to my computer in Adobe Premiere Pro. This used to be easy because my old computer was a Sony and had the firerwire input. My new computer is a Dell and I have bought a firewire-to-usb adapter. My trouble happens when I try to use this to transfer video into Adobe Premiere. It is not seeing my device. How can I set up Premiere Pro to recognize my video coming through the USB? Otherwise, there is NO WAY to get my video into Premiere Pro and this super expensive program is worthless for me.

      Thanks!!!!

I assume your Sony Camera is tape based?

In that case I doubt if you will be able to get this to work through a FW to USB adaptor.

FireWire passes the digital video as a stream, USB works in packets - and a stream of video is what you need when capturing from tape. That's why FW is/was used with DV and HDV tape based cameras.

If your camera has analog outputs, you will need to find the equivalent of a device like this one. but for Windows, as this one is Mac only:

Amazon.com: Blackmagic Design H.264 Format Video Recorder (for Mac Only): Office Products

Maybe someone can recommend one for Windows.

This device (or similar)  will take the analog audio and video from your camera and then digitize (using electronics contained in the connector) into files you can import and work with in Premiere.

The downsides are you are converting from analog, and you will not be able to control the camera from your computer.

As you say, the simplest solution is to have a computer with a FireWire port.

What you want to do can't be done with any version of Premiere, which works to capture video from a tape camera ONLY via firewire... or a 3rd party hardware device, which I don't use so can't give you a brand or model

There may be (probably is) software that will work with a USB port, but you would need to find software that will capture files that are compatible with Premiere

You didn't say whether or not you had a tower or a laptop, (and when you mentioned Sony, I assumed that was a VAIO, correct)?

If you have a tower, get a cheap PCI firewire card.

If you have a Laptop, and it has a PCMIA card slot, you can get a Firewire PCMIA card for it, (check your laptops specs to see if you have one).  Either solution will only run about $25.  Google it.
