1. Re: audio/video file size
Neil Enns - Adobe Nov 22, 2014 8:10 PM (in response to Small Town Gal)There's no explicit file size limit, however video (in particular) and audio files are the single biggest cause of large folio files. Rather than directly including the video/audio in the folio you are better off streaming it.
Note that using DPS to replicate an audio book isn't really going to work well regardless of whether you stream or embed the audio.

BobLevine Nov 23, 2014 4:33 AM (in response to Neil Enns - Adobe)Neil’s right. This is not a great idea for DPS and could well be rejected.
Try using a Fixed Layout EPUB instead.
The tools included with the newest release of InDesign make it a better
choice for this type of project.

Small Town Gal Nov 23, 2014 6:48 AM (in response to Small Town Gal)Dear Neil and Bob,
I'm trying to get away from the restrictions imposed by the current audiobook publishers and like to do things my own way -- that's why I was intrigued by the possibilities that DPS might offer. We are publishing a tour book in InDesign epub format and it occurred to me that a DPS version for iPad might be a wonderful volume. Text, video, audio, all combined to make a wonderful tour. Could you be more specific as to why you don't think it would work in DPS? Is it really because of technology restrictions or is it because it hasn't been done before? I can see it very clearly in my mind?? By the way, I am a video producer, so video and audio are not a problem for me. I would prefer that the content was embedded in the DPS volume so that people did not have to be online and use up their data to watch. I really do appreciate your additional thoughts on the matter. Thanks again. -- By the way, who marked Neil's answer as correct? I thought I was supposed to do that?

BobLevine Nov 23, 2014 7:10 AM (in response to Small Town Gal)The bottomline is that it’s Apple’s ball and bat, so it’s their game and their rules. I don’t know one way or the other if it will be approved the way you’ve described it but I wouldn’t give it more than 50% chance of getting through as a book.
DPS SE apps, for better or worse, go under pretty heavy scrutiny. Forget the audio and video, you’ll need lots of slideshows and scrolling text.
Back to file size. I’ve done some folios that exceeded 400 megs, but for me the magic number is 500. I don’t know what Apple’s max is for size and we didn’t discuss this yet, but you shouldn’t even be thinking about dual orientation for this thing as it will double the size of the folio. If you put all the videos and audio in a folder, how large is it?

Small Town Gal Nov 23, 2014 7:46 AM (in response to BobLevine)Dear Bob,
Thanks so much for your thoughts -- I really do appreciate your replies, as well as Neil's. I can make the file size for the video and audio extras any size that I want. Our tour is of a historic nature, and we include several historic journals written by pioneer women that describe the Native Americans, early travel methods, etc. How neat it would be for the tourist to be able to hear these journals read as an audio file as they drive along. We could eliminate the video and just use photos (I am also a photographer) and keep the file size down, but it's also great to be able to see live pelicans flapping their wings as they feed by the rapids, etc., etc. etc. I'm open to staying within the rules (If I really knew what the rules were?????) and solving potential problems. Thanks for your reply.
ADD -- Forgive me, but I'm thinking that you're talking about restrictions imposed by Adobe DPS when in fact you're talking about Apple's restrictions - duh! I'm really trying to get away from having to go through Audible's audiobook restrictions that makes all audiobook publishing go through them or not be accepted. I thought that perhaps a Digital Publishing Suite production would be thought of in a different light and be accepted. Audible is an Amazon subsidiary, not Apple's, but it controls the content for Amazon, Kindle and iTunes, so if you want to sell through those stores, as I understand it, you must publish through Audible and have a hard cover book in print before the audio book is even accepted. We don't intend to publish in hard cover, only e-books. I still have to do more checking on this to make sure I'm correct.

BobLevine Nov 23, 2014 8:13 AM (in response to Small Town Gal)Sadly, the rules seem to be a moving target, but again, what you’re describing here is a book and Apple is not likely to accept it as an app.

Small Town Gal Nov 23, 2014 9:26 AM (in response to BobLevine)Dear Bob,
Thanks much -- I will read your blog post with much interest. I suppose we'll have to publish our audio books through our own website or find other sources. It's too bad when business always seems to control creativity…and I hope that iBooks accepts our epub! Small Town Gal
ADD -- I have always thought of Digital Publishing Suite as a source for publishing magazines, like Oprah Winfrey or those folks -- but you're saying that these products are actually apps and not digital magazines? Perhaps that's where my confusion is coming in as to what you can do with DPS. Is there another category of DPS that I'm missing?
