JJMack Nov 22, 2014 3:29 PM (in response to jktjsk)How can that be if your painting on a copy the background layer your painting on top of 100% opaque pixels the resulting pixels will be 100% opaque and color will depend on the brush blending mode and paint opacity paint color and color in the layer's pixels. Changing a layers opacity should effect all pixels in a layer the is only one layer opacity adjustment number and slider. The change should be applied to every pixel in the layer relative to each pixel's current opacity.
Brushes also have hardness and strokes are anti-aliased these can easily effect what you get and see about the edges.

5. Re: brush tool acting up
jktjsk Nov 22, 2014 4:29 PM (in response to JJMack)I am trying to change the opacity of only the color I have applied with the Brush, by using Fade Brush Tool.
The problem is that the brush refuses to draw continuously. Instead, it applies several blobs of color, even though I am firmly holding down the mouse button as I draw. Then when I use Fade, it fades only the last blob of color.
This is extremely annoying...I cannot do the editing I need to do.
Thanks for your help...

jktjsk Nov 23, 2014 9:31 AM (in response to JJMack)I have reset the tool and changed spacing to 1%. Still misbehaving.
I suspect this is a bug that Adobe needs to fix.

8. Re: brush tool acting up
jml007 Nov 23, 2014 9:59 AM (in response to jktjsk)It acts like the brush hits are all separate clicks of the mouse, not continuous (mouse down) strokes.
I say that because of your statement "Then when I use Fade, it fades only the last blob of color".
Your mouse/driver sounds suspect here.
Click and drag a stroke with the mouse, then let go of the mouse button. Then do CTRL + Z (CMD + Z on MAC) to see if the entire stroke goes away or just the last "hit" of the stroke. The whole stroke should go away, not just the last "blob".
Tap F5 and try Clear Brush Controls

JJMack Nov 23, 2014 11:25 AM (in response to jktjsk)I think if its a bug other users would be reporting that they also have your problem. It more likely a problem on your machine since others do not seem to have your problem. yours is only hit
