P Spier Feb 8, 2013 3:17 AM (in response to MisterKlaw)Inversion is not uncommon in Preview, which is not able to handle complex PDF properly, but I don't recall seeing reports that it showed up in Acrobat as well. Can you post a sample PDF with the tif (not inverted when placed) so we can take a look at it?

3. Re: Grayscale images invert when exporting to .PDF (maybe?)
djfern73 Jun 10, 2014 6:31 AM (in response to MisterKlaw)The problem is that any Mac application that uses PDF, like Pages for instance, also uses the same rendering software as preview, so if it looks 'negative' in preview, it will in Mac Mail, Pages etc as well.
The workaround is relative simple (if annoying).
Export your document as an .eps from InDesign.
Open that .eps in Acrobat and save as a PDF.
Et voila.
Looks and prints normal in preview and all other Mac OS apps.
Obviously this is not a great solution for a multi-page document, but for the one-pagers I'm doing, it works.

4. Re: Grayscale images invert when exporting to .PDF (maybe?)
MagikMann Nov 14, 2014 7:54 AM (in response to MisterKlaw)I have been having this same problem. I put a number of black and white images from photoshop into an indesign document. When I export from indesign to a PDF the images are inverted (black is white and white is black). I have this problem when I open the problem with the Adobe Reader. I would like to find an export setting that I can adjust to avoid the problem because I need my documents to be easily readable by anyone that I might need to send the document to, regardless of what system they have or what program they are using to open the PDF.

5. Re: Grayscale images invert when exporting to .PDF (maybe?)
MagikMann Nov 14, 2014 7:57 AM (in response to MagikMann)I should also add that I don't have this problem on my system at home (a Mac), or my school's PC's, but when I try to open the PDF on my school's Macs, this is when the images appear inverted.

BobLevine Nov 14, 2014 7:57 AM (in response to MagikMann)Please post a screenshot showing that you are in fact using Reader and not Apple's Preview.

Jeffrey_Smith Nov 14, 2014 8:36 AM (in response to MisterKlaw)Does the inverted image have any alpha channels?

8. Re: Grayscale images invert when exporting to .PDF (maybe?)
BobLevine Nov 14, 2014 8:44 AM (in response to MagikMann)There is no way to assure that a PDF exported from InDesign will appear properly in any PDF reader outside of Acrobat or Reader. When you export you are exporting to Adobe PDF.
My bet is that your school's machines are set to open PDFs in preview.

9. Re: Grayscale images invert when exporting to .PDF (maybe?)
JukeyAdobe415 Nov 25, 2014 11:36 AM (in response to MisterKlaw)I too am having the same issue. Exported PDF from Indesign = b/w images look like negatives. Additionally, if opened in Acrobat Pro the PDF looks normal and good but if reserved via Acrobat Pro same result = b/w images look like negatives.
I am still searching for a solution.
BTW: I am on a MAC OS X 10.9.5.

10. Re: Grayscale images invert when exporting to .PDF (maybe?)
JukeyAdobe415 Nov 25, 2014 11:38 AM (in response to JukeyAdobe415)I meant, if "re-saved" via Acrobat Pro, same result = b/w images look like negatives.

BobLevine Nov 25, 2014 11:40 AM (in response to JukeyAdobe415)Where? In Acrobat?

12. Re: Grayscale images invert when exporting to .PDF (maybe?)
JukeyAdobe415 Nov 25, 2014 11:58 AM (in response to BobLevine)OK I hope this makes sense:
• Image started as grayscale PSD from PS CS6
• Imported into Indesign CS6
• Exported to high resolution PDF from Indesign CS6
• PDF preview on the desktop looks like a negative
• If opened in the app Preview, it looks like a negative
• In emails the PDF preview looks like a negative
• Opened in Acrobat Pro it looks fine, good, no problem.
• If I re-save the PDF in Acrobat Pro - the file looks like a negative again from the desktop, in Preview and in an email.
I just upgraded to Mavericks (I know late, but this is a company computer), does this have anything to do with the upgrade?
Thank you for your quick response.

13. Re: Grayscale images invert when exporting to .PDF (maybe?)
BobLevine Nov 25, 2014 12:07 PM (in response to JukeyAdobe415)Stop using preview…it’s junk. When you export you export an Adobe PDF. Anything outside Acrobat or Reader is a crapshoot.
