2. Re: after update to CC from CS6 multi-camera playback/edit now glitchy
Kevin-Monahan Oct 15, 2014 9:23 AM (in response to CoralVision)Hi Eric,
I would try trashing preferences and updating any GPU drivers. You should also trash the media cache.
There is also this: Updating projects mid-stream can sometimes show these problems. Is it possible to return to CS6 to complete that project then move to CC for the next project?
Thanks,
Kevin -
3. Re: after update to CC from CS6 multi-camera playback/edit now glitchy
CoralVision Oct 15, 2014 10:35 AM (in response to Kevin-Monahan)Hi Kevin,
Thanks for the tips, I will trash prefs and cache ASAP and update on the results. I updated the NVIDIA driver when I did the CC update.
Since posting this morning, I've gone on to work through a non-multicam project, using different media (Newtek's MPEG2 4:2:2 in 720x480i) and found that the glitching/hanging problem unchanged: though I had assumed multicam was part of the problem, I now don't think so.
As for your final suggestion, for some of my work I will have no problem trashing the old project, HOWEVER, a significant part of my work is processing public meetings - for these programs I just save-as and change the date to conserve the settings, audio configuration, and recurring elements in the timeline. If I have to start over on these programs that will be a bit of a pain in the neck. Of course it's all part of the deal when you upgrade, so I'll try not to be a crybaby.
More soon,
Eric

5. Re: after update to CC from CS6 multi-camera playback/edit now glitchy
CoralVision Oct 15, 2014 3:15 PM (in response to Kevin-Monahan)OK, so I went back into multi-cam mode after trashing media cache and preferences. Things went OK for a few minutes, but now symptoms are increasingly intense and blocking further progress on the edit.
Clarifying "symptoms": While playing back, image judders and seems to "catch-up" every 10 or 20 seconds. Every few cycles of this, the image simply freezes for 3-5 seconds while playing, then resumes. Every few minutes the program window switches out of multi-camera mode on its own accord, so I switch it back. Every 5 or 10 minutes, one of the angles in the 2-camera multicam clip goes red in the multicam view. In the bottom-right corner of the timeline I see red "x" - the warnings it reveals are numerous audio dropouts and less numerous XF media read errors.
Right now I am setting up a fresh project from a different show - if the symptoms recur that would eliminate the "updated CS6 project" and "corrupted clip" as potential causes of the problem.

6. Re: after update to CC from CS6 multi-camera playback/edit now glitchy
CoralVision Oct 16, 2014 2:05 PM (in response to Kevin-Monahan)So I am getting the same problem on new "non-updated" projects.
I spent quite a while trying to roll back to 8.0.1, using the directions on your blog, but PrPro did not appear in the "previous versions" section of the CC app. Un/Re-installing just gives me 8.1 all over again, and I can't seem to find any option to get the old version. I am trying to bump up my RAM to eliminate that as a potential contributor to the problem, but as you see on the other thread related to this issue here,
there are others on other platforms with other specs having the same issue, with canon MXF being the common denominator.
I know you guys are working on it as are we all.
Can you offer any further guidance on my attempt to roll-back to 8.0?
Thanks for your earnest efforts on our behalf...

Thanks very much for the feedback and I apologize for not getting back to you earlier (very busy around here this week).
I do realize the blog was not correct because we don't yet have a patch on Adobe.com. I spent a hunk of yesterday trying to pull the right levers to get a patch up. That's still a work in progress for Adobe.com, but I did find a patch on the prodesigntools website and updated my blog with links to the patch here: Install a previous version of any Creative Cloud application
Thanks,

Oh, that's good news. What did you do for the solution? I would really like to add that to my troubleshooting notes.

11. Re: after update to CC from CS6 multi-camera playback/edit now glitchy
CoralVision Oct 17, 2014 12:33 PM (in response to Kevin-Monahan)I had uninstalled 8.1 yesterday, but had not restarted CC or the machine. This morning I got back on a support chat to find an alternative roll-back, and while I was waiting for the rep to come on-line I started up CC so I could be ready to answer questions about the fail, and lo, there was the previous version, just as you said it should be in your blog.
I rolled back to 8.0 and tested both an "updated" project (started in CS6) and a new project. Half of my problem went away: On 8.1, my events log was showing numerous audio dropouts, and slightly less numerous "MXF media read errors" or something like that (not sure of the exact syntax). Rolled back to 8.0, and the MXF read errors stopped, while the audio dropouts remained.
My next step is to beef up my RAM and retest to eliminate that as a potential problem - at 6GB, my RAM was marginal on CS6 and is now underwater on CC. Nevertheless, my system monitor show that I'm never maxing it out; never pushing it over about 70%. My RAM will be in Tuesday and in the meantime I am going to roll back to CS6, retest, (hope for a breakthrough from you guys), and then re-update after I install the additional memory. I don't think it is the memory, but the only way to tell will be to get more and try to repeat the fail.
Thanks for getting back to me! Sorry you have to deal with all that kvetching on the other thread(s), but if you help Adobe users for a living, you are probably used to people behaving poorly when things don't go exactly as they think they should.
I will keep you posted with any helpful information I discover,
Eric

13. Re: after update to CC from CS6 multi-camera playback/edit now glitchy
CoralVision Oct 22, 2014 7:29 AM (in response to Kevin-Monahan)Well, my system does like having more RAM, but this has not in any way solved the problem: tell Arjun that I have eliminated RAM as a potential cause of my issue.
Rolling back to CS6 last week I wrapped some quick turnaround projects in queue. Yesterday I rec'd additional RAM, installed it (now at 18GB), and again updated to PrPro8.1. I immediately reproduced the original fail: getting back to a multicam clip (a project file I last worked on in 8.1 last week), I ran/cut the sequence for about 60 sec, producing ~4 "MXF media error" messages (red circle "X") and ~4 "audio dropout" warnings (yellow triangle "!") in the event viewer. No red screen in the viewer, but many of my clip thumbnails in the timeline were red frames. I rolled it back to 8.0.1 and eliminated the MXF errors. The 4-6 second hangs with audio dropout warnings are still happening about every 30-50 seconds of operation, though not every hang/stall/judder produces a dropout warning.
Kevin - Can you report on the status of work on this issue from your side?
Thanks!

15. Re: after update to CC from CS6 multi-camera playback/edit now glitchy
CoralVision Oct 23, 2014 9:28 AM (in response to Kevin-Monahan)A new wrinkle...
So as I said I eliminated the "MXF media errors" by rolling back to a previous CC version. This did not, however, solve the problem that started this thread - choppy, hangy playback during editing. Yesterday I processed a show that was live-cut using a BlackMagicDesign ATEM Television Studio, and recorded to a BMD Hyperdeck Studio, encoded in BMD's house version of ProRes422.mov... My first go-round with this flavor of media. Of course I didn't find any sequence presets that seemed to match what I had, so I just pulled a clip to the timeline and let PrPro decide what to do with the sequence. It chose "AVC Intra class 100" - OK, whatever works. While editing (I didn't have a whole lot to do except trim it up, add titles, and mix down the audio) I watched the event viewer rack-up at least one audio dropout (with judder/freeze in the viewer) about every 90 seconds of operation for about 2 hours. When I finished up, the "match settings" export was a .MXF file (dun dun dun....). Not sure if this means that my dropout/freeze problem is not associated with .MXF source files (since the source was PRoRes422) OR if perhaps the "AVC Intra 100" sequence is related to .MXF somehow and is thus a common denominator between this sequence and other sequences that used the Canon XF sequence preset.
Sorry to muddy the waters with this new info - I'd be happy to answer any specific questions that occur to you or try some other tests that seem appropriate.
Eric

16. Re: after update to CC from CS6 multi-camera playback/edit now glitchy
CoralVision Oct 29, 2014 10:41 AM (in response to Kevin-Monahan)Further update:
Coming back around to another aspect of my work on this machine - finishing shows shot on a Newtek Tricaster (720x480NTSC), using their "studio profile" which is essentially an MPEG2 with a 4:2:2 color space - shouldn't be a huge problem for a machine that was sailing along with no problems in CS6 with any of my workflows. Anyway, I am reproducing the audio dropout/freezing/hanging/ggllitcching behavior, racking up an event log entry every 20-30 seconds of playback.
Also, I should add that while the dynamic link function (updates in AE transfer over to Pr more quickly and reliably than before the update), I am getting far worse (i.e. none at all) realtime playback of AE elements in my timeline. Very slow loading of AE elements on starting Pr ("media pending" in the bin and viewer for 3-4 minutes, Black/empty media on the timeline thumbs and in the canvas). And on export, extremely slow render/output of parts of the sequence containing AE elements.
This is all happening in the 8.1.0 (81) build of PrPro

CoralVision Nov 4, 2014 11:45 AM (in response to Kevin-Monahan)Hi Kevin,
Any news about the status of the bug you mention here? Is this the same bug you announced as "re-opened" over here: Re: Re: MXF read errors in CC 2014.1 ?
Also, since it now seems that the glitching playback and audio dropouts may be a separate issue (from the MXF media error bug), can you tell me whether this is an open bug for your team? Should I be submitting further bug reports that focus on this part of the issue? What would be the most productive/supportive way to engage with this process?
Looking forward to a return to full functionality...

Feel free to submit further bug reports if this is happening on new projects. Any projects that are updated might be subject to corruption. I am on vacation and away from the office, so I can check on this when I return next week.
Thanks,

19. Re: after update to CC from CS6 multi-camera playback/edit now glitchy
CoralVision Nov 10, 2014 7:25 AM (in response to Kevin-Monahan)update:
Still trying to push ahead in PrPro 8.1... I am still having the same issue(s) - MXF media error and audio dropout messages, along with maddening hang/stall behavior. I can now say that the hang/stall/audio dropout effects everything (all kinds of media - SD, HD, canon.mxf, EOS.mov, ProRes422.mov, NewTek MPEG2...), while the MXF media error is of course isolated to the Canon fodder. Misbehaviors are consistent among projects started new in 8.1 and projects updated from 8.0 or CS6. (I skipped pre 8.0 versions of CC). My current crutch/adaptation is to clean media database and trash media cache folders, then restart machine, about every 30-40 minutes, or each time the other editor runs from the room crying, whichever comes first.
Thanks!

CoralVision Nov 17, 2014 10:21 AM (in response to Kevin-Monahan)Another aspect of/clue related to this bug: when these seizures overtake PrPro, they often knock my program viewer out of multicam mode. What could be happening that would "reset" the program viewer display mode?

22. Re: after update to CC from CS6 multi-camera playback/edit now glitchy
CoralVision Dec 1, 2014 11:56 AM (in response to CoralVision)MXF media read errors continue.
Audio dropouts and glitchy behavior continues.
All efforts to adapt to the problems have been lamely unsuccessful.
Support chat was smugly unhelpful.
Staff on the forum is not empowered to support or communicate openly about the issues or Adobe's efforts to respond.
Deadlines-missed; workflows-rerouted; employer-concerned.
This is the story of my first quarter as a CC subscriber.
Is there anyone, on staff or otherwise, who can help me flip this script?

Kevin-Monahan Dec 1, 2014 12:27 PM (in response to CoralVision)Hi Eric,
I don't know what else to suggest other than that you may want to transcode Canon MXF footage until the problem is completely resolved. Sorry, but that's what I would do.
Regarding not "being empowered to support or communicate openly" about issues, believe me, I am always at the limits of what I can say. I apologize if that's not good enough for you, but I'm doing my best.
Thanks,

25. Re: after update to CC from CS6 multi-camera playback/edit now glitchy
CoralVision Dec 4, 2014 8:05 AM (in response to CoralVision)Journal Entry:
This morning I had a less-than-terrible experience (working with PrPro CC 8.1) with one of my regular editing chores - finishing a short public meeting from last night. It was live cut on a NewTek TriCaster, so did not involve any actual editing, just trim, title, fix audio, and export. It was recorded in NewTek's MPEG2 "studio" profile and the original media weighed less than 10Gb.
The work on this 12 minute program took about 16 minutes, during which I noticed 6-8 momentary hangs of 2-5 seconds in duration. When I finished and checked the event viewer, I had only 4 "bangs" ("!" in a yellow triangle) for "audio dropout detected at ... in 'adobe player'." For this task it was bearable, however, if I were cutting multicam video these hangs would be causing the usual face-melting frustration. I have switched back to PrProCS6 for all complex/extensive programs, and the overall user interface is refreshingly snappy compared to PrProCC8.1, BUT, I have to say that I am experiencing almost identical hangs and freezes. This is why I now think the best possible explanation for my PrPro woes is NOT inside PrPro itself, but is being caused by the CC app and whatever it is doing in the background to manage my subscription. PrProCS6 with CS6 Production Premium license = worked fine ... PrProCS6 with CC subscription = GLITCHY ... see what I mean?
