Mac Adobe Flash installation opens up "Textedit"?

Hello,

I am running on a Mac using Yosemite 10.10.1 and recently I have been unable to watch videos due to my "Flash player out of date". I clicked the link to update my Flash player and tried to open the downloaded item, but everytime I try to open the installer, it opens up Textedit and I can't update my Flash. Shouldn't the installer open up its own installer application? Need help please!
