Why can't I update my flash player ?!!

I can't play videos on my mac anymore because it keeps telling me that I have to update my flash player. If I go to the Adobe site and try to download the update it works great until step 2. Then when it comes to open the downloaded file to move to the next step it won't let me open it .. It's not the right type of file to it just opens up and displays a bunch of weird letters and symbols ??
