Flash player update

I am using a MacBook with OS Maverick and Safari browser. I cannot run anything with Flash as I need to update my current program. When I try (numerous attempts) I am told to close Safari, which I do, then after downloading, the program stops installing with the message "Must close Safari" which is clearly already closed.  Therefore, I cannot run anything requiring Adobe Flash.

Open Safari.

From the upper left-hand corner of the screen, choose Safari > Quit Safari
