Is having the smart previews file, lrdata, mandatory?

I mean, I don't foresee, in near future, to use detachable hard drives, or photo servers or anything. So my photos will remain in my main laptop. So, do I really need to have and retain an .lrdata file which will hog my disk space?

Also, after a preview is discarded, will it be generated again, if I open the file in Lightroom later?
