Can't install Flash player on Macintosh

Running a late 2012 Mac Mini with the latest OS (10.10.1) and when I tried to upgrade Flash, the upgrade didn't work and Flash stopped working. Following the help scripts I uninstalled Flash from both FireFox and Safari and tried a clean install. The install fails with a 'general install error' notice near the end of the install cycle. I've tried booting into safe mode and installing and got the same general install error. I've downloaded the installer from several different sites, same problem. I started all this about a month ago and then let it go, hoping that the problem would get solved but started all over again today, and getting the exact same general install error. Even did the uninstall again today. I have absolutely no idea of what to do. Any ideas?

You should always download software directly from the manufacturer.  It's your best guarantee for determining that the thing you're trying to install is legitimate.

Please use the offline installer:

http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/latest/help/install_flash_player_osx.dmg

If that doesn't work, we'll need the contents of the install log to understand more.

The install log is located at /Users/<you>/Library/Logs/FlashPlayerInstallManager.log

OK, tried that installer and the install window looks a little different but the process stopped at 9% on one try and 11% on the next try. There was an installer log but it had no content so I deleted and ran the installer again but there is no install log now.

Okay, well something isn't working right.

I'd start by checking your disk for errors and repairing any problems encountered, then booting into safe mode to try the installation there, using the offline installer.  If the disk repair finds errors, download a fresh copy of the installer before booting into safe mode.

Booted up off the Apple network drive and ran disk repair. It didn't find any problems but it did some cleanup. After that booted into Safe mode and tried an install and it got to 13% before it failed (it was 9% before). Booted into normal mode and tried install again and it failed at 12%.

Any other ideas? (besides buying a new computer)

Same exact scenario as Alioop. New MBPro 15-inch mid-2014, purchased a month ago.  Started with OS 10.10.1 and the installer got to 75% complete with AdobeFlashPlayerInstaller_16_ltrosxd_aaa_aih.  After uninstall, it still reached only 75% and only 4% complete after trying with install_flash_player_osx.  Just updated to OS 10.10.2 and the results exactly the same as with 10.10.1.  The 75% complete point corresponds with the close browser interrupt.  There is no "Library" in the Users/<you>/Library path.  The Log file under System/Library/Logs/FlashPlayerInstallManager.log dated 3/31/14 has zero bytes and comes up blank in Console.  Tried with both Safari and Firefox.

Unfortunately, it looks like something is messed up with the filesystem.  The installer can't see the drive.

> 2015-01-30 17:16:49 -0500   IM: [install started]

> installer: Error trying to locate volume at /

I know that a few people have told me that after upgrading to Yosemite, that their hard disk was renamed to a long string of garbage characters.  Renaming it to something sane fixed the problem.

Here's a similar thread over on the Apple forums:

Broken Installer Permissions | Apple Support Communities

And a similar older one:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1203509

A google search turned up a bunch of results affecting a bunch of different products.  The recurring theme is that something is very messed up with the disk, but beyond recommendations for various repair tools, there's no clear magic bullet.  My recommendation would be to reach out to Apple support to see if they have a suggestion.  If you do find a resolution to this, please let me know.  I'll be happy to share it with people that encounter the problem in the future.

While the threads you listed seemed a bit tangential, I tried the thrust of their direction:

1) Disk Utility -> Verify Permissions showed things ok.

2) In spite of the seeming good news, then performed Disk Utility -> Repair Permissions, which took a while, and had quite a laundry list of repaired permissions.

3) The Flash installer (full version) completed its work without further incident.

Thanks!

Still no luck with getting Flash Player installed. Have booted into Safe mode and run Disk Repair and Disk Permissions multiple times, tried various versions of the installer. Here's the log from the Console:

This seems problematic. We're asking the OS to resolve a filesystem path and it's returning NULL:

2/16/15 11:44:01.589 AM nsurlstoraged[294]: realpath() returned NULL for /var/root/Library/Caches/installer

It looks like we're unable to proceed at that point and we exit.

The only reference I can find to a similar error is in a scenario where people have partitioned the disk to boot multiple operating systems (Windows/Mac).  Does this sound familiar?

This disk was never partitioned and isn't now although my previous computer was partitioned for Windows and that computer/drive was used to set up the current computer/drive and it looks like pieces of Parallels are still around. Do you think removing all those software pieces might improve things?

On second look, you mentioned that you ran disk repair and then looked at the logs.  I just want to confirm that the log section you provided also cover the time period in which you ran the installer.

I wasn't able to find a lot on this particular failure on Google.  I *did* search my entire set of system logs for nsurlstoraged and didn't find any entries, and this is my day-to-day machine.

All I could come up with was this guy has an aftermarket SSD that was doing some dual-boot stuff at some point, there's some good advice down towards the bottom of page 2:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6683322?start=15&tstart=0

This one is really convoluted, but it's someone dual-booting between MacOS and Windows 8 using a custom boot manager called Clover:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/303615-guide-install-windows-8-uefi-on-legacy-bios-with-clover...

So, I think you're really down to talking to Apple support to see if they can help you resolve this.  I'm just not finding a lot of resources, and it feels like a rare failure. There's always the worst-case option - backing up all the good stuff and doing a fresh install, after repartitioning the disk to MacOS Extended (Journaled), but there's probably a much more elegant solution if you can find the right expert to ask.

Yes, those logs are from running the installer.

My SSD came with the Mac Mini straight from the Apple store and I checked for partitions and there are none and the disk is formatted to MacOSExtended (Journaled).

I've not had any other problems with this machine either with installs or upgrades. But, I'll see if I can get some Apple help.

Thank you for your efforts!

Yeah, that's really strange.  If they're able to get you fixed, I'd love to know what they did so that I can help the next person.  FWIW, I have a personal iMac running MacOS 10.10.1 with a new Samsung SSD (the old disk had died), and I don't have any entries for nsurlstoraged on that machine either.

Are you using any Anti-Virus or security software that might be in-play?  That's the only other thing I could think of.  You might try disabling that stuff temporarily to see if you can proceed past it.

FWIW, those are two totally different installers, one of which comes from a third-party organization.

These are the two failures that really jump out at me:

2/17/15 4:31:24.637 PM nsurlstoraged[9399]: realpath() returned NULL for /var/root/Library/Caches/installer

2/17/15 4:31:29.918 PM mdworker[12657]: code validation failed in the process of getting signing information: Error Domain=NSOSStatusErrorDomain Code=-67062 "The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -67062.)"

You may need to go to Control Panel > Security > Allow Apps to be downloaded from Mac App Store and Identified Developers if it's set to Mac-Store only.

If that's not the code validation problem, then maybe the date/time on your computer is way off?

That still leaves the original filesystem problem though, but at least you'd have one hurdle out of the way.  (Also, I didn't see the signing failure initially in your logs...)

I set the Control/Security/Allow Apps to the most permissive level a few attempts ago (allow anything) and so that's not it. Checked the date and time and in this universe it is Feb 17 2015 at 4:51 -----

Apologies, this fell off my radar.

We released an update yesterday.  I was just wondering if you're still seeing this installation problem with the latest installers.
