Error : The version of Adobe Flash you are attempting to install is not the most current version

1. I was upgrading from Adobe CS5 and based on Adobe's own recommendations I uninstalled all Adobe products prior to installing Adobe Creative Suite. This included not only Adobe CS5 but ALSO FLASH v16.

2. After uninstalling all Adobe products (including Flash 16) I rebooted the computer and installed the latest build generated for Adobe Create Suite.

3. After installing Adobe Create Suite I attempted to reinstall Flash but it will not let me install it.

4. The error received is "The version of Adobe Flash you are attempting to install is not the most current version".

5. Flash is NOT installed and when running the "Is Flash Present" test from Adobe's site the answer is NO.

I have the exact same problem thought I would sort by uninstalling all adobe but still says I have newer version installed

Normally the latest Flash Player installers should be at

but currently there is still only an older version (16.0.0.287) available for download.

Pat,

I have already downloaded and attempted to install the full standalone installer of the latest version of Flash and the same error is returned. I have to assume something is corrupted on the system, likely in the registry, and the installer doesn't know how to handle this so it is generating the invalid error.

If you have not yet done so, please use the standalone uninstaller posted at Uninstall Flash Player | Windows. Then try installing again.

Hi Gavin,

According to the log files 16.0.0.296 was installed on 25-Jan and then there are multiple attempts at trying to install 16.0.0.287 which will fail. According to the log file, there hasn't been any manual uninstall attempts, however, you indicated you've attempted to uninstall. What happens when you try to uninstall, using the standalone uninstaller from the tech note I linked to? Please post a screenshot. After running the uninstaller, what files remain in the C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash and C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash directories?

Also, is the ActiveX Control or the NPAPI plugin the one that is returning the downgrade attempt, or is it both?

I overlooked the link you provided to run an Adobe uninstall utility (sorry, I had searched for this before and couldn't find it on the web). After running this utility it cleaned up whatever nonsense was causing the issue and allowed me to install Flash.

But to answer your questions, Adobe Flash was not installed under Programs / Features and running the Adobe Flash test from IE results in "Flash is not installed". Flash was installed and functioning properly in Chrome. I did manually removed Flash from Programs / Features so I can't explain why this wasn't indicated in the logs I provided. And I attempted to reinstall flash drirectly from the Adobe site (first through the standard interface and then by downloading the latest version of the standalone installer) so I also cannot explain why multiple versions who appear in the logs I provided.

My guess is the install process stopped at some point and left some form of bad / corrupted data behind in the registry. Running the utility cleaned it up and allowed me to run the install.
