can't download books bc "Error. Check Activation"

Every time I try to download a book, the message comes up, "Error.  Check activation."  There is no error code number, and I couldn't find anything similar in the errors list.

If you remember your activation credentials,then

1. Deauthorize ADE [Help -> Erase authorization]

2. Authorize ADE again. [Help -> Authorize Computer]
