2 Adobe FlashPlayer 16's

Hello. I'm getting the message "Adobe FlashPlayer 16.0r0 has stopped working!".  I just changed operating systems to Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit and I'm running Firefox 35.0.1 browser.

The tech that installed the new O/S failed to load Win7 Service Pack 1 (SP1). It caused a lot of problems. I personally downloaded the SP1 last night and ran all the Windows Updates. So I'm current but now I am showing 2 Adobe FlashPlayer 16's. One is Active X and the other is NPAPI. I don't know the difference and I don't know whether to uninstall them both and download a fresh Adobe FlashPlayer 16, or what?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Dick,

1. Active X is Flash Player for Internet Explorer. NPAPI is Flash Player for Firefox.

2. The current version of both Active X and NPAPI is 16.0.0.305.

3. There were more Windows updates today (Second Tuesday of the month aka Patch Tuesday)

4. If you click on Start, then Control Panel (make sure View is set to Large Icons) you should see a Flash Player Icon. If You click on it it brings up the Flash Player Control Panel.  If you click on the Advanced tab it should show you the versions of Flash Player that are  installed.

5. When using Firefox, if you click on the Menu icon then select Add-ons, then select Plug-ins, you should see Shockwave Flash Object listed. It should be Enabled.

You may have done all of these things. This is all the info. I have. If it does not solve the problem maybe someone else can help.

Good luck

Hi and thanks for the prompt reply. I think I've done these but I will

check them out again according to your list above. Shockwave Flash was *Always

Active*. What I still don't understand is whether it is o.k. (or not) to

have both the IE and Firefox versions on my system...sounds like they are a

necessity if I ever do want to do something with IE.

That leaves me with why I keep getting the message that *Adobe

FlashPlayer 16.0r0 (strange number) has stopped working. *It flashes at me

constantly and I just 'X' out of it.

Hi Dick,

1.You can have both Flash Player Active X and NPAPI installed at the same time. I use both IE and Firefox so I have both installed.

2. I do not know what the issue is with the flashing/popup but there is a lot of Flash Player phising that tries to get you to download malware. I have seen it numerous times over the years when I search on google.

The important thing is to ignore Flash Player popups and only download or upgrade Flash Player from an official Adobe website.

3. I am not sure if uninstalling and reinstalling Flash Player will do any good since you seem to have verified that you have the latest versions installed both for IE and Firefox.

4. If you do not get any good suggestions here you might want to try posting in the "Using Flash Player" section of the forum.

Good Luck

Thanks Andy. I saw something as I was doing my research on this problem

that said it was a no-no to try to install Adobe Flash Player *before

installing SP1 after installing a new operating system. *The guy did just

that and I am thinking that I need to uninstall both Active X and NPAPI and

reinstall. Thoughts?

Hi Dick,

I googled "Adobe Flash Player Clean Install" and found the following link to this forum.

How do I do a clean install of Flash Player?

If you have problems reinstalling Flash Player here is a link to an Adobe website for installing. At the bottom it says "Still having problems" and provides links to do the install.

Hi Andy...was just about to email you and give you a high-five. I went

thru the entire process suggested by Adobe for removing/reinstalling. I

believe I followed it to the "T". My only area of feeling vague was Step

#3..."Delete Flash Player files and folders". My Win7 Ultimate does not

have a "Go" but rather "Search Programs and Files"...which I guess is the

same. I entered the %appdata% parameters (2 strings) one for Flash Player

and the other for Macromedia and got rid of those files contained...shut

down and rebooted and on Adobe had them search for any trace of Flash

Player. There wasn't any.

I've now been using the computer for about an hour just perfectly (the

high-five!) but five minutes ago I got the same danged message that *Adobe

Flash Player 16.0 r0* has stopped working!...grrrrr!!! Any ideas now where

to go? Maybe I didn't go to the right place to search for the two strings

(%appdata%)? That was the only really unclear part of the online

instructions. Everything else was so detailed but then Chris Mathews took

for granted that everyone (me) understood perfectly how to make that search

for the two strings. Even on the video his voice was so soft (with my

volume turned up as high as I could get it) that I had a hard time hearing

him in that specific section of his otherwise great tutorial.

Do I wait to hear from you perhaps clarifying for me the search process for

the two strings? Or do I start all over and uninstall and try harder to

locate maybe bits/pieces that I somehow overlooked? Or should I try to go

the Adobe Forum and try to get Chris Mathews to make his tutorial a little

more clear? Even his written tutorial (verbatim of what was on the video)

was unclear to me. Maybe it's me that's the problem Andy. I'm 76 yrs old

next month and sometimes I feel like Rip van Winkel after waking up 20

years later!

Dick

Hi Dick,

1. It sounds like you successfully did a clean install of Adobe Flash Player and it did not solve the problem.

2. I googled "*Adobe Flash Player 16.0 r0* has stopped working!..". and it appears that some other people using Firefox for a browser are having the same problem.

I did not see any easy and safe solutions in my searching.

3. At this point I would think the easiest fix is to switch to Internet Explorer or Google Chrome for your browser. I realize that this is like sweeping the problem under the rug, but it will make your computer usable. You can always come back to the Firefox/Flash Player problem when you have time to spare.

4. Before you start experimenting with Firefox/Flash Player it would be a good idea to familiar yourself with the System Restore function on Windows 7. It may be useful in case you mess things up.  I have used it a few times over the years.

5, In addition, Windows 7 has a Backup and Restore function on the Control Panel that allows you to backup all your files and create a System Images on an external hard drive.

I view this as a form of insurance.  Please note that the System Restore function listed in number 4 above is totally separate from restoring your hard drive with a System Image.

Good luck

Hi Andy,

I took out a new CD-R for my D Drive and just attempted to format the disk.

It went all the way thru the process and then told me it was unable to

complete the format. Should I be using a CD-R/W?

I would like to have an emergency set of files...just in case, as you've

said. However, the question in my mind is once the disk is written upon,

should I have the flexibility to be able to change or write more to it

later on, should that become necessary?

Clearly I don't know exactly what I'm doing, Andy. I know just enough to

get myself into trouble and I'm trying hard to avoid doing that. The backup

is a great idea. I suppose I could shadow/image the entire system but then

it says I can't restore individual files/folders. It's the whole enchilada

and it will over-write upon restore whatever new might be on the system.

That thought is nagging to me.

Ideas?

Hi Dick,

1. Internet Explorer:

Have you tried using Internet Explorer for your browser rather than Firefox.

From my searching I was under the impression that the problem you were experiencing with Firefox/Flash Player would not occur with Internet Explorer.

2. Backup and Restore:

a. You are not going to be able to easily/conveniently backup your files and create a system image using CDs or DVDs because they do not have enough space.

You will need to  purchase an external hard drive.

b. You will be able to backup you files and folders and separately create a System Image. So that gives you the option to either restore your hard drive with the System image or you can just restore certain files or folders that you select.

For your info I am inserting a picture of my Backup and Restore screen showing you that I have it setup to backup files and folders and also a System Image:

Hi Andy,

I guess I really don't understand all of the configuration necessary to

make the switch, Andy. I had to have my tech get Firefox configured using

Team Viewer just a week or so ago and to get rid of the Spanish version on

everything that showed up. I'm in Honduras and anybody you get to help you

with your system (shall we say) takes *liberties *while they are working on

it to make their work easier...they don't speak or understand English.

So, what is necessary (the a-b-c's) in order to switch to IE? I use

Startpage as my search engine because of the privacy. They have to get

stuffed into the right places or IE will want to shove Bing, Yahoo or some

other search engine that I don't want. Other than Startpage (or Ipsquik)

there is my gmail (mail.google.com) and those have already been checked out

and approved by Emsisoft, my internet security program. What else can I

tell you so you can help?

Also what happens to Firefox? Are they still there but just not the default

provider? In other words am I able to go back and forth between IE and

Firefox? Or do they butt heads? Then what do I do if this Adobe problem

gets worked out and I want to again make Firefox my main provider? What are

those steps?

Can't thank you enough for all this help, Andy. I really would like to get

better at this aspect of computers/internet stuff.

I do have a Samsung 1 terabyte external that should be useable with over

970gbytes left after backing up everything before this Win7 Ultimate

install. The file system is NTFS, I'm told and I think when I tried to

follow your previous instructions to BackUp I *think I was told *as it

prepared for the backup that I couldn't use that file system. Does that

sound correct?

If I can both backup files and folders plus do the imaging that covers it

all. Then I would need to familiarize myself with what needs to be done

(and the right precautions taken) to restore should that ever become

necessary.

1. Internet Explorer:

To start Internet Explorer you click "Start", then click "All Programs". A list of all you programs comes up. Look for Internet Explorer on the list and put your cursor on it and click on it.

To put an Internet Explorer icon on your task bar - Click Start, then click All Programs. Find Internet Explorer in the list, put your cursor on it and RIGHT click on it - from the menu that comes up. click on "Pin to Taskbar".

Windows 7 Start menu all programs.PNG

2. Samsung external Hard drive.

I do not know why your Samsung external hard drive did not work for Backup. NTFS is the correct file system. Do a google search for "Windows 7 backup NTFS  incorrect file system" and see if you can find any info.

If I tried to say good night in Spanish, I would probably misspell it. So, I just say good luck.

Hello Andy,

I thought I nailed it this time. When I shut down and came back up and

rechecked for Flash it simply was not showing. I went to the web and

little later and danged if the message hit me again.

I am trying to learn how to become familiar with IE, Andy...it is a little

confusing because it offers Firefox. Really what I want is to get my GMail

to showup just like it does in Firefox. IE gives all kinds of choices

as to *default

*programs and I don't know what that's all about, so I'm in the process of

learning the ins-and-outs of IE.

I do have a suggestion...I can't for the life of me understand why Adobe

has not come out with a plugin for Firefox that offers to completely

uninstall every shred of flash. These guys know where every possible spot

is that flash could be stuffed and writing a simple unistall program that

does everything that Adobe tells anyone wanting to do a clean uninstall to

do in writing...should be able to be done with a simple little program. It

might also offer the option of handling the complete install of the then

current Adobe Flash. Years ago I was a computer programmer for the USNavy

and was in the very first IBM RAMAC 305 programming class in San Francisco.

So I know these things are possible. Do you have the right contacts at

Adobe?

Right now I'm pretty disappointed in the plugin and Firefox.

Dick Newman

Hi Dick,

I hope you are not having the same issue with Internet Explorer(IE) that you were having with Firefox and Flash Player.

1. Concerning you use of G-mail with Internet Explorer. I did a little bit of searching and saw at least two ways to get your G-mail notifications while using IE.

a. Apparently there is third party software available that will put an icon on the IE task bar that will show when you have G-mail. Search for "Internet Explorer G-mail notifier".

I have not used any of them so I cannot recommend any particular download.

b. Another solution might be as follows:

           i. Make "msn.com" your homepage on IE.

ii. Sign up for an Outlook.com e-mail account (that is Microsoft's e-mail system - any e-mail's received show up on the msn.com webpage in the upper left area where it shows OUTLOOK)

iii. Do an import of your G-mail to your new outlook.com account as described here -   Add a Gmail account to Outlook.com - Outlook.com help

2. I do not know anyone at Adobe. The only reason I came to this forum is that I have a problem using the  Flash Player updater on my Windows 7 32 bit computer.  Since the updater does not work for me I use one of the Adobe sites to do the Flash Player update each month (sometimes 3 times per month). Now it is a minor issue, but it took me a while to find the workaround solution.

3. I do not know why the uninstalling Flash Player doesn't completely remove all Flash Player files and folders. From what I have read it is not uncommon (these days) for uninstall programs to leave files behind.

Good luck,

Andy

Hi Dick, As Steve Jobs would say - Just one more thing.

I use Outlook.com for my Email. To pin an Outlook.com icon to my taskbar (that notifies me of new Emails), I use the following procedure which might work for Gmail.

1. I log into my Outlook.com Email account. (you would log into your Gmail account)

2. Then I left click on the Internet Explorer Outlook.com TAB and drag the TAB down to the taskbar.  Do not drag the icon in the address box down/you must drag the TAB down to the taskbar.

When you start dragging the TAB the screen looks strange, but when you get it down to the taskbar the icon appears and you obviously unclick.

When I get new Emails a number shows next to the icon that is on the taskbar. Like I said I do not know if this will work for Gmail

Hello Andy,

I tried one more time to do the thorough Uninstall of Flash paying very
