CrossReference class

Hi,

Does anyone know what the CrossReference class are for. I've found them all over an inherited help project and have no idea what they do. Here's an example:

"...to an incorrect GL account number, you can correct the problem
by making <span class=CrossReference>General Journals</span> entries,
crediting the incorrect account and debiting the correct account..."

Your style sheet has or had a style called CrossReference.

To add to Peter's thoughts, would there have been a Word document imported that contained a cross reference and the style was also created?

I think the project was imported from FrameMaker, but it might have been Word.

Doesn't really matter where it came from. It's the fact that it is there now. Is the style defined in the style sheet, either an external style sheet or one embedded in the topic (more likely)?

They define the appearance of that bit of content so unless they are not working or not required, leave them alone. If they are causing a problem, then let us know what it is.

They do not appear in the .css, just in the topics. They are not causing a problem other than making the code messier. I just wanted to make sure they didn't serve some purpose that I was missing before deleting them.

Are you sure the style is not embedded in the head section of the topic?

Does it make the text look any different?

Yeah, it's not embedded in the head section and doesn't seem to have any affect on the text appearance.

The best thing to do is to take a backup and remove the references. If the cross refererence is not in the .CSS file or the head section it is probably OK to remove.

Your options are to ignore it or clean up.

To clean up, first take a backup of the project and put that somewhere safe.

Your problem then is how you clean up. Your example was:

<span class=CrossReference>General Journals</span>

You could search for the first tag and replace it with nothing but then you hit the problem. Your search for the second tag will find closing span tags that are not related to this and mess up your project.

So it's either a manual clean up in one hit or as you work on topics, or you learn all about regular expressions. Google will tell you more about them.

Hi all

Just an observation regarding the orphaned </span> tags. In my own experience, as you open each topic in the RoboHelp HTML WYSIWYG editor, if it finds orphaned closing tags, it seems to be reasonably adept at cleaning them out.

Just a thought... Rick

I'd agree with Rick. In fact RH is good at getting rid of all orphan "closing" tags.

I don't get orphan tags in my work! 🙂 Just kidding.

It's easy enough to copy the project and give it a whirl.
