Adobe flash installer crashes on Mac 10.9.5

Safari disabled flash today (March 2015) because it was out of date. I got the latest installer and ... it crashes. Manually and automatically removed flash player. Checked to make sure mach_kernel was there. Rebooted. The installer crashes. No more flash player for me, apparently.

I am running MacOS 10.6.8, and the Version 17.0.0.188 installer crashed for me, too.  However, the offline installer you suggested worked.

How can I tell the full number of the version that is currently installed?
