What do I do to update flash player on my Mac.

I need help with blocked plug in due to update neccessity.  Everything is fine until step 3 where I'm asked to buy something I don't need for 9.95 a month.  When I don't bite everything seems to go kerflooey.  My update stops, and I can't see any graphics people send me on Facebook, or anything else.  Very frustrating for a person of limited computer skills.  The problem is complicated further by the fact that updates seem to be demanded every few weeks.
