I have tried the recommended fixes (including trying and failing to erase the existing activation, uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe Digital Editions 4.0 (today, after a complete uninstall) and still get the "Error! Check Activation" message when I try to download EPub books from my public library. I notice that when I try to save the book as a file it is listed as "which is: Adobe Content Server Message (1.7 KB)" and shows up as a 2 kb document in my downloads folder. I've tried several library books with the same outcome. Also, I can't erase the existing activation--the responses that it is unable to do so and simply suggests that I "please try after some time" which is not helpful.

If due to some reason, you are unable to deauthorize ADE, follow the below steps:
Mac:
1. Go-> Go to folder.
Go to folder dialog will appear.
2. Type ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Digital Editions
drag the activation.dat file to the trash.
ADE will be deauthorized now.
Now Authorize ADE again.
ADE will be deauthorized now.
Now Authorize ADE again.
Windows:
Choose Start > Run.
In the Open text box, type regedit and then press Enter. The Registry Editor opens.
In the left pane of the Registry Editor, locate the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Adept
Right-click the Adept key and choose Delete.
In the Confirm Key Delete dialog, click OK.

Far as I can tell.... digital editions problems are never solved...
I've talked to the place I bought the e-books from .. they can't get digital edition to work.
I have tech support with Microsoft ... they tried and they couldn't get it to work.
Adobe doesn't support digital editions... because it's free .. I guess that's why... t
I give up ...
I can try to get the e-book text book.... some other way............ grrrrr
