Why do changes in RH not get into my final output?

RH 9.02.271

On Windows 7 64-bit

On Windows Vista 32-bit Virtual Machine

Hi RoboHelpers,

I've been using RH 9 for many years now, and have a problem I can't explain.

We got our main project back from our translators and I started building and testing our chm output.

On one topic, we have this portion of correct RH content:

However, in the chm output, it looks like this:

Notice that the image, caption, and step 2 are missing. It simply ends after the first item. All text to the end of the topic, including the footer is missing.

The HTML for the topic, insofar as I can tell, is fine:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

Does anyone have any ideas why my content in the chm simply stops in the output?

In addition, something else seems to be going on. For example, as a test, I tried making a change to this topic and to some other topics and regenerated the help, but the changes never ended up in the test chm output. It's like the content is stuck during generation at some point in time and isn't refreshing, getting the latest. The RH source looks fine, but not the output. I've tried restarting my comp and regenerating and I get the same thing. What's strange though is that I created another test chm output with just the one above topic and excluding all others, and it shows the entire topic with the changes just fine.

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.

I figured out the problem. (After the many hours I spent on this, it's always disheartening to figure out how easy the fix actually was. *rolls eyes*)

The issue was I had an old chm in the project folder root. If you have a chm in the root of your project directory, it uses that chm instead of what you built. I knew this, but had forgotten I had the bad chm in the root folder. So, I deleted the chm from the project root and regenerated the chm and viola, it worked! Thankfully, the problem is now

Hi there

When you look at the Output View, are you seeing any issues?

If you examine the source code for the topic where the image fails to show, do you see that the image is actually being referenced?

Are you using Conditional Build Tags and Expressions?

Cheers... Rick

Also try running File > W3C Compliance > Validate All.

Does this return any errors? (Warnings are fine, but errors can cause problems when you create output.

Hi Willam. Thanks for responding. This did find one error: There was an image on an entirely different topic that was missing a closing quotation mark for an image attribute. But there wasn't any error or warning on the topic in question.

I've fixed it and rebuilt the chm now. I very rarely use this validate option (in fact, I forgot it existed), but it looks like it might be a useful tool to correcting things.

Unfortunately, the chm still exhibits the same problems and it's still not accepting any changes made in the RH source.

Based on that gnarly code I'm seeing, I'm going to speculate that your translators may have inadvertently munged this particular HTML page.

I don't think so in this case. I say that because my initial post has the html code we got back from our translators and in RH it looks fine. The strange html above is merely what shows up in the chm output for some reason. Why the code appears that way in the chm output and not in the source is a mystery to me.

Hi Rick. I tried generating WebHelp, it worked fine. My changes are displayed as expected. So the problem appears to be something to related to the CHM output.

Hi Rick. Thanks for the quick reply.

Output view? - Yes, there are some HHC5003 errors for some missing images but nothing related to the topic or image in question that I can see.

Image referenced? - Yes, it's being referenced in the RH html properly. However, the html somehow gets corrupted in the chm file. In the chm file, if I right-click on the file and choose View | Source, there is some odd code though where that image should be (shown in red):

<ol type="1">

    <li><p

        class="BodyText" style="font-style: normal;">Použijte ovladač stroje k um&iacute;stěn&iacute; automatick&eacute;ho kloubu př&iacute;mo na horn&iacute; plochu seřizovac&iacute;ho kalibru, jak je vidět dole.</p></li>

</ol>

</body>

</html>

Very weird.

Conditional Build Tags? - None on this topic.

I just had somewhat of a breakthrough. In a test SSL, I set all the conditional build tags to None and rebuilt the chm, and the contents come in fine. So, somewhere, some CBT is causing an issue that's corrupting the chm. I'll do some more testing excluding CBTs one at a time to see which one it fails on.

Thanks everyone for the help.

LOL, glad you sorted it!

So many times in these forums folks will say they aren't seeing changes and so many times it ends up being the exact condition you describe. They are looking at an old version of the content. Yet they seem irritated if we suggest that this may be the case!

Cheers... Rick

Heh. I would've *loved* for someone to have suggested what was causing this early on. I appreciate the help you and Willam gave. It's nice to have good helpers like you on these forums. Even though I found out the problem on my own, your post did help me start looking in the right direction by wondering why it worked fine in WebHelp output. Anyway, Keep it up.
