I keep having trouble installing the adobe flash player, because right as it's starting to download it stops and prompts, "not enough permissions to write disk." What do I do?

Hi rachelleb75063757,

Flash Player installs to restricted areas of the file system and thus requires Admin permissions to install.

What OS is this on?  Is the user ID you are using to install a standard user or an administrator user?

The OS version is 10.10.3, is that the right thing? I didn't know there was a difference, I suppose. It's making me give my computer password to install, so I'm assuming that makes it an Administrator install? But once I put in my comp password, shouldn't that let it install?

Hi nuk473

Since Flash Player installs to protected system file locations OS X will always prompt for a password.  Your User ID may or may not be an administrator.  You can check to see if your user id is an administrator or not by doing the following:

  1. System Preferences > Users & Groups
  2. The left pane will list all users on the system and their account type (administrator, standard, etc).

This FAQ What userid & password do I need to install Flash Player? provides more information.

I have the same problem. I'm the Administrator on my mac (and the only profile anyway besides mandatory guest). I've confirmed I'm the administrator to and posted the same problem saying:

I got this message when I tried to update my flash "adobe flash installation failed. not enough permission to write to disk".

I followed the forums suggestions and:

- Restart my computer - no help

- Repaired my disk permissions - No help

- Uninstalled flash completely off my computer, which worked fine but then when I tried to re-install a "clean copy" the same message comes up and now I don't have any form of flash on my computer at all.

My macbook is only used by myself and I have all the admin rights.

Can anyone help?

I had the same problem with an install of both Creative Cloud and Flash. Repairing file permissions didn't help and even an OS upgrade wouldn't fix it.

In order to fix the problem I followed an error notification for the Adobe CC Installer which said that it couldn't create a folder ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CoreSync. This led me to check the permissions for the folder at ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe (Where ~ indicates your user directory).

Select the Adobe folder, right-click and choose "Get Info" from the menu, expand the Sharing and Permissions tab at the bottom of the window and check that your user account has Read & Write Permissions, mine wasn't listed so I added it and voila Flash now installs!

I hope that this helps!

That seems like it would fit the problem I'm having. I'm so sorry to be so dense. I'm trying to follow where the file is "~/Library/Application Support/Adobe"

But can't find any of these files. I've searched manually and then searched using the "search" function for keywords like "CoreSync" and even "Library" but it's not bringing up the files.

Could you give me some more guidance to find the file please? It certainly sounds like this could be the issue. (Sorry Chris - Thanks!!)

Hi XMattrixX,

Depending on the OS X version you have the users Library is most likely hidden (Apple made this change a while ago).  In the Finder menu click on Go > Go to Folder... >

Finder.jpg

In the text field type: ~/Library/Application Support.

GoToFolder.jpg

This will launch Finder to the correct location to view the properties of the Adobe folder.

Thanks Maria! That was really really helpful

So I followed Maria's help to find the adobe folder Chris and all the options say "read & write" (System, Admin and Everyone)

I even tried adding "Matt (Me)" to the list as "Read and Write" but still get the insufficient permissions message.

I tried restarting my computer and doing it again. Still no joy.

I thought that was so promising as well.

Hi XMattrixX,

I'd like to get some log files from you to troubleshoot further. Please see Where do I find the Flash Player installation log on the Macintosh?.

  • If you're using the online installer (file size < 1 MB), I'll need all 4 files listed in the FAQ.
  • If you're using the offline installer, I'll need only the install.log and FlashPlayerInstallManager.log files.

I'd be great if you could also post a screenshot of the Flash Player installer with the error message.

Thank you.

Hi Maria,

I watched the video and placed the markers in the install.log

However the issue is the install doesn't start at all so the console has nothing to record at all.

I'm really hoping I haven't just overlooked something really stupid (but at this point I'd take the shame for an answer) .

I've followed the update links and downloaded the file to install offline: "AdobeFlashPlayer_17_a_install

Here is the screen cap of the error message:

Thanks for your patience

Matt

Hi XMattrixX,

The file "AdobeFlashPlayer_17_a_install" is actually the online installer, not the offline installer.  This installer downloads and installs Flash Player silently in the background.

The FAQ mentions a total of 4 files.  Since nothing is being written to the install.log file the failure point is before this step.  Please provide the other 3 files, FlashPlayerInstallManager.log, Adobe_ADM.log and Adobe_GDE.log?  For the Adobe_ADM.log and Adobe_GDE.log files, please follow the instructions to enable verbose logging before uploading the files.

Thank you.

Hi XMattrixX,

Thank you for providing the additional files.  I am seeing some failures in the online installer log files (files 3 and 4).  The online installer is handled by a different team and I will forward these to that team for further investigation.  They may ask for more information from you after looking at the log files.

What version of OS X do you have?

Looking at the FlashPlayerInstallManager.log file, the last entry indicates a successful installation on 2015-05-30.  Is Flash Player currently installed on the system and if so, what version?  You can go to Installation problems | Flash Player | Mac and click the 'Check Now' button to see the version installed. If Flash Player is not installed the same Installation problems | Flash Player | Mac page contains links (at the bottom of the page) to download to the offline installers that you can try using to install Flash Player.  The offline installer is the full installer and does not download anything in the background.

The links are in the 'Still having problems' section.  For Firefox you'll want Flash Player for Safari and Firefox - NPAPI.

You are my favorite person ever!  My mom asked me to figure out why Flash player wouldn't install on her Mac and after trying a repair permissions, uninstall, etc. this did the trick!  THANK YOU! @chris75074890
