adobe flash player installer Mac OS X

When prompted "Flash Player out of date" I have downloaded the adobe flash player installer on my Mac OS X. Each time I try to install it stops and tells my it is unable to install. Please help me to figure out how to install an updated version of Adobe on my Mac. anyone else get this message and not have the computer knowledge to fix it?
