I have a new ipad and have tried to download previous purchased books. However, at Adobe login I have an error messageI am using the the same account, but had to change the password as had forgotten it. Can anyone help? would be very grateful, Customer care at Adobe pointed me here

Have you earlier activated ADE using Anonymous account? If, yes, you might have fulfilled the books using that account.

This error message will appear if the same book had been downloaded using different account. That is the reason I think, you might have activated ADE earlier by choosing the option Activate without an ID.
