RoboHelp 7 - Problem With French Characters

Hello,

Our organization just purchased and installed RoboHelp 7; we upgraged from RoboHelp 5. Our organziation is mandated to produce English and French versions of all doucmentation, including online help files.

In RX7, when we post a Webhelp or Flashhelp project to our server, all the French characters (é, â, ç, etc.) are replaced by the copyright sign and other symbols such as "A". Chm files and viewing the compiled project from the local drive are good. The default project language is French. This occurs in new projects created in RX7 and projects upgraded from RX5.

We did not have this problem in RX5 and are publishing to the same server.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Thanks,

Solved,

In the Single Source Layout Pod, right click the output type. Select properties and check the "Add Mark of the Web" box.

Are you seeing the corrupted characters everywhere--topics, glossary, index, etc.?

Have you checked your source code in the upgraded version (RH7) of your project to see if those characters are corrupted there? The fact that everything looks fine when viewed from your local drive suggests that it's probably fine, but it doesn't hurt to check. Please post back with your findings.

Benjaminson,

The TOC, Index and Glossary are fine, the characters appear as they should. The source code is also correct. I switched the IE6 encoding to UTF-8, to relfect the encoding on the HMTL pages, still no luck.

I am trying to get some information for you on this. Is the server Unix based please?

Update.

We generate the project. Post it on the server. French characters do not display.
Copied a topic from the server to the local drive.
Open topic in note pad.
Changed something in the code, (i.e., adding an additional letter to word or cutting and pasting a line of code)
Copy the topic back to the server
French chararacters display!

Why?

Egh? The only difference that should make is allowing the content to run locally. The problem you had was only when run on the server.

Peter,

Not sure why this worked. The project was fine prior to checking the box on the local drive, and still is fine now.

If you get the time, I would be interested to learn if it goes wrong again if you remove the mark of the web.

Peter,

I cleared the check-box and re-complied.
Locally the French Characters were good.
On the server the did not display.

Perhaps, this problem is occuring becase we are copying the output files to the server, rather then publishing to the server.

I wonder if perhaps you are updating all the files on the server or just the changed topics? Could it be that some internal file that is part of the output is not making it to the server?

We tried both options
Copied and replaced individual HTML files and, deleting the project output folder (WebHelp) from the server and replacing the folder with the new complied output folder onto the server.

Adobe have identified the cause of this but I cannot give you any indication as to when it will be fixed. Until then I suggest you continue applying the Mark of the Web as that seems to be fixing it without any adverse effects.

There's more information under item 22 of Using RH7 on my site.
