How do I convert my avi files into mp4?

    tyraa63014654 Level 1

I have Adobe Premiere Elements 10. I create DVDs. My video clips are in avi. I need to convert them all into one mp4 so that I can upload the movie to youtube. How do I do that?

          Please explain.

Where are these .avi files now, and what are they - DV.avi standard or standard widescreen?

Depending on the properties of your video (if you have Timeline DV.avi widescreen), you could use

          Share

          Computer

          AVCHD

with Presets = MP4 - NTSC DV Widescreen

Just make sure that your Premiere Elements 10 is not installed on a computer that uses a NVIDIA GeForce (up to date driver version). That is a major problem for any Premiere Elements 10 workflow. If that is applicable to your work, more details will follow.

          Please supply more details.

          Thank you.

Thank you, ATR. The avi files are now on my computer on the timeline, waiting to be converted into mp4.. I have several pieces of a single DVD and I am planning on converting them together into one piece so that I can upload the single file to youtube. I do not have NVIDIA GeForce on my computer. Right now the avi files are DV standard. I have newer DVDs that are in widescreen but right now I am concentrating on formatting the older DVDs so that I can upload them.

I am practicing on just one minute of the avi clip. I just tried your suggestion and it seems to work well. I used AVCHD, preset MP4 - NTSC DV Standard. It appears to be around 10% of the original clip. And the quality is good. I tried another suggestion before, using: share, mobile phones and players, Apple iPod and iPhone, and preset = iPod and iPhone - High Quality. But the result was a small screen even though the size was one-third of the example I just created. I think that solves my problem. Do you have any other suggestions? Thank you, Tyraa

Let us back up for a moment.

I am not clear on what you meant by

It appears to be around 10% of the original clip.

Did you mean that the original image was cut off?

              If so, then...

              Are your DV.avi standard = 720 x 480 4:3 with pixel aspect ratio = 0.9091?

And, did you leave the project preset as NTSC DV Standard in the new project dialog that appeared when you opened the new Premiere Elements 10 project?

In the Share/Mobile Phones and Players/ route did you customize your frame width and frame height under the Advanced Button/Video Tab of the preset selected?

Please give more details. I just want to make sure we are OK on the details between us.

              Thank you.

                Dear AT,

By 10% I meant that the original minute was 216MB, and when I converted it to MP4, now it is 23 MB, which is perfect for uploading to youtube. Thank you very much for your help. It solves my problem. Sincerely, Tyraa

                  Thanks for the follow up.

Glad that the issue is resolved and that you now have the file that you need for the upload to YouTube. Great job.

If time permits, could you explain "was adjusting the project preset the way to get MP4 export to work for you when it had not for Share/Computer/AVCHD with Presets = MP4....... or Share/Mobile Phones and Players and its MP4 export?

                  Best wishes

                    Dear AT,

What threw me off when I went to share, and then computer, is that the file is an avi, so I just looked there. It didn't occur to me that I could go to AVCHD to find the correct way to convert my video. I have just completed converting my first video. Originally it was 4.15 GB (20 minutes) and the MP4 is now 450 MB, which will be far easier to upload. And I cannot discern any difference when I play them side by side. Thank you, AT, for your time. Sincerely, Tyraa

Thanks for sharing your video with us. When I saw that it was about 20 minute in duration, I decided to watch just a little now and the rest later. But, I stayed for the whole 20 minutes. Great job of capturing the essence family and the nature around you.
