Recording IE7 Pop-ups

When using Adobe Captivate 3 to record a demo in IE7, I can't get Captivate to record any pop-ups from any of the sites we may visit during the demo. The pop-up itself shows as a blank page however Firefox shows the pop up correctly but unfortunately I need to record in IE7. I've tried recording the application specifically and also full screen. This is on a workstation with Vista Business 32bit with SP1 but the issue was happening pre SP1. All updates have been applied to the software in use.

Wild guess, something to try. Click on the titlebar of the popup when it
appears. That should force focus. No promises this will work - I'm just
trying to understand what's happening.

Thanks for the response Steve, unfortunately that didn't work. I clicked and dragged that pop-up window all over the place but it still shows blank page in the window.

Any chance this is a secure window - https?

Is this a page anyone could look at? If so, maybe if you share the link,
others here can check it out to see if it happens always, or maybe see
something you cannot.

no this is not a secure window, we've been using weather.com to test. There is a pop-up on the main page.

Hi all

This must be a Captivate on Vista issue. I just tested the same site using Captivate recording IE7 in Windows XP Pro and it seems to record popups just dandy.

Sorry I'm not any more help than this, other than to simply confirm that Captivate does indeed record popups on IE7 for this site. At least for me, here on XP Pro.

Hope you get it sorted! Rick

Weird - I tried to get popups to appear on Weather but even after I disable
popup blocker, none were appearing. Might seem like a dumb question, but
have you got exact steps to produce the popup?

I didn't do anything special other than going to weather.com directly. I've tried it on other workstations here in our office and it produces that pop-up. I've tried other various sites such as netflix.com that produce pop-ups all with the same result in that captivate shows the IE7 pop-up as a blank page. Maybe it is indeed a Captivate on Vista issue. Hmm...

Weird. You have nearly convinced me to (shudder) restart my PC into Vista mode and test! Maybe I'll do that and double-check the same thing.

Hi all

I just tried to replicate the problem you are having, cvaisey. So, I went to Weather.com and captured some screens with pop-ups. All pop-ups showed up in my Captivate movie. I manually captured the screen shots with pop-ups, using the PRINT SCREEN key on my keyboard, while recording in Demonstration mode. I used IE 7, and am on a Windows Vista Business Enterprise, 32 bit (no SP1) machine. Have you tried forcing a print screen?

Cindy - Thanks for trying that, I just gave it another shot and still no go, the main user who is experiencing this issue now says she isn't sure if it was doing it pre Vista SP1 and that she may just have not tried to capture a pop-up before the SP1 install. Anyone else have SP1 on their Vista box that can confirm?

Thanks!

I just tried it again. This time I made the recording window smaller. The pop-ups showed up as blank windows, with "about:blank" in the address field. (I am assuming that your pop-ups are new windows that should apear after clicking on a link.) The first time I recorded at a window size of w:1014, h: 723. The second time I recorded at w: 700, h: 500. Perhaps if you made the recording window bigger, the new pop-up window would appear correctly.

Also, I experimented recreating what Rick (Captiv8r) did and was able to successfully capture those pop-ups, as well.

I guess I wasn't sure what type of "pop-up" you meant, so I tried both.

Can you please confirm - are you talking about popup windows, or are you
talking about rollover menu items as per Rick's post here

http://www.robowizard.com/RoboWizard/Tutorials/weather.htm

I have Vista, and SP1, so once you can tell me clearly and unambiguously
exactly what you are clicking or rolling over or whatever I can test for you
and see if I can replicate your problem.

Please don't dismiss my request that you tell me exactly what you are doing.
Without exact information it is impossible to know what to test.

Sorry I haven't posted in a few days, the issue still remains.

Steve the issue is not the rollover menus as demonstrated in that demonstration, I confirmed that they are working. The issue happens when IE7 attempts to open a new window (pop up) to display the window and shows it as "blank page"

I hope this helps and thanks for your help

It does - but to remind you, I tried to reproduce your problem already and
have actually had problems even generating a popup. Can you tell me an exact
step to exactly replicate what you do to generate a popup that you cannot
record. Once I have that, it will be easier for me to figure out what is
wrong and (hopefully) find a solution.

Steve - It does seem now that I've tried it a hundred times that weather.com doesn't always generate the pop up I'm talking about. I have captured a demo of it happening, if you can tell me how to include it in a post so you can view it.

I used www.popuptest.com in my demo so you can use that, "multi-popup test #2" was the actual test I used.

Thanks again

That page fires up 3 popups that Captivate captured fine once I enabled
popus.

Since all the popups ended up popping under, I had to select them to see
them. Since every one was empty, I don't see how this is recreating your
issue.

I'm guessing that popping under means it went to the taskbar instead of staying on the viewable screen?

Whatever window IE7 tries to pop up or under it shows up as blank page. If I'm not using Captivate and trigger the same pop ups or unders they show the true page and not blank page.

Yes.

Ahhhhhh, now I understand the problem, and yes I see it.

So when I have Captivate running, the contents of the popups are actually
displayed in separate Internet Explorer tabs. The popups do not gain focus,
so they popup underneath Internet Explorer and they also do not contain
anything.

This is definitely a bug of some sort. Hard to know for sure if Captivate is
truly causing it, but it sure looks that way. You should file a bug report
with Adobe.

You can work around this issue. There's several ways you could approach it,
and here's one option:-

- record IE up until the point where you click the link to launch the popup.
- Click the link
- stop recording and *close Captivate*
- go back to Internet Explorer. Find the empty popup window and close it.
- not click the link again to relaunch the popup. It should launch properly.
- relaunch Captivate and continue recording onto the end of your original
recording.

I am also having a problem with recording pop-ups, and this pop-up is from a https site.

Basically, the recording goes along fine and the pop-up works, but when I preview the recording the pop-up is blank/white.

Please advise. I'm using XP, IE 7 pop up blocker turned off, Captivate 3.

Thank you!
