The awnser is no, not without javascript. The way to do it is to use javascript to change the url parameters of the img src "?action=thumbnail&width=50&height=50" change it to your required resolution.

You could try using the alternative tag {tag_blogpostautherpictureurl} or the Liquid equivalent {{blogpostauthorurl}}. Do something like this:
