Not necessarily.

Why doesn’t my version of Photoshop or Lightroom support my camera?

If you don't want to upgrade, you can download the free Adobe DNG converter, convert all Raw files from your camera to DNG format then edit the DNGs in Lightroom 5. An extra step for you but no extra cost.

Adobe Camera Raw updates are only for Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.

The Camera Raw engine is part of Lightroom's  program code. You must update Lightroom itself to get new camera support.

You must be running Lightroom 6.5 to open Raw files from the EOS 80D.

Which version are you running?

‌I downloaded the new DNG-converter yesterday. But I prefer to work directly with the raws.

Will there not be an codec update for Lightroom 5?

Got the same problem with Microsoft Windows 10... Can't use explorer to sort out my pictures before editing. Really irritating.

There will not be any updates to LR 5 that will let you read the RAWs from this camera.

Adobe stops upgrading one version when the next full version is released.

So, Lightroom 5 will not ever be upgraded for any reason now that Lightroom 6 has been released.

‌Adobe has NEVER updated previous versions of Lightroom for new cameras.  If you want to use RAW instead of DNG (I don't convert to DNG as I think it is a bad idea) you will have to upgrade To Lr6.5.

It's been the case since Lightroom version 1.0.

When a new version is released (version 6) that marks the end of updates for earlier versions (v.5). Adobe offers the DNG converter instead.

I tried but the update button is not highlighted so can't update! And even the Adobe DNG converter won't recognise my raw files.
