I believe I have sorted it

For the record what I did was install Google Chrome and installed it from there

It now works both in chrome and safari

Is that the error message from the installer, or the note on the Flash Player download page:

Posting a screenshot is always very helpful.

If it's from the installer itself, where did you download the installer from?

That's a comment on the page, not an actual error.  Click the Install button to download the installer.  Close the browser window.  Locate the downloaded file (most likely in the Downloads folder) and launch the installer file.

Your screenshot of the page is perfect and helps to clearly identify the problem, which is the install button is missing, and isn't related to the anti-virus note, but I can see where it's confusing.

Try going to get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions - select the OS and player type you want.  Does the Download Now button display? (it may take a second or two).

I'm glad you were able to resolve the issue.

Google embeds Flash Player in Chrome and the Install button will not display in Chrome (but the screenshot you posted doesn't appear to be from Chrome as the browser is identified as being Safari).  Chrome and Safari also use two different types of plugins: Chrome uses the PPAPI plugin and Safari uses the NPAPI plugin so they aren't interchangeable between the two browsers.
